SOUTHS GREATEST WEEKLY NEWSPAPER
58th ANNIVERSARY

EMANCIPATION
CELEBRATION
EMANCIPATION PARK,
TUESDAY, JUNE 19tll
Music, Mirth, Merriment
On Tuesday, June 19, the colored citizens of Houston and Harris County will turn aside from all labors, cares and toil and all join in one mammoth celebration of the race’s natal day in
Texas. It is very fitting and appropriate that we make these annual pauses to give thanks t^ God for His bounteous blessings and tender mercies,'to accord due honor and tribute to
those who made possible our emancipation from human bandage, and to take inventory of what our race has accomplished in these brief years of freedom. Both during war and in
times of peace the colored man has played well his part, and from the fall of Crispus Attacks on Boston Commons during Revolutionary period to the storming of the fortress of Metz
in the late martial conflict with Germany, not a single black patriot has ever raised his hand against his country; but in the face of ordeals that try and test men’s souls, he has ever re-
mained loyal, true and steadfast to the Stars and Stripes. If we are to be judged by the depths from which we came rather than by the heights which we have attained, most assuredly
we have cause for rejoicing and thanksgiving. Therefore, on Tuesday, June 19, 1923, let us lay aside all work, close our places of business and unite our forces to make this Juneteenth
celebration a memorable day in the history of the race in this community. Every colored citizen is urged and invited to take part in the celebration, and to dedicate and consecrate our-
selves to the larger and more onerous tasks and duties that are before us.
