'l'ho put year seems to have been
one of disaster and depreciation in
every branch ot commercial, mcr-
cantilo and industrial lito. ihe
number of i: ilures is appalling. The
statistics will bear us out in our as-
sertion, that the per centago of fail-
ures is much beat ier in the northern
slates than that of the southern.
In a rocent issue wo tailed at-
tention to the fact that almost every
cotton mill in the New Kngland
antes had either closed entirely or
running on short time, while those
in the southern states, particularly
Georgia, woro not only running on
toll time but paying liandsomo divi-
d nds.
The (iranitevillc cotton factory,
one of the largest in the South, luis
been run on lull time, has added
new looms, and produced 128,703
yards more cloth than the proceed-
ing year. The entire production ot
the factory was 10,663,203 yards,
consuming 8,347 commercial bales
o( cotton—cost 13 48 100 conls a
pound. The profits from the sales
of goods during the y«av amounted
to $74,499, from which ft dividend
often per cent, of the capital stock
of 8600,000 was paid. Tho company
also purchased a valuable mill priv-
ilege near tho present mills, erected
gas works, new operation bouses,
and maintained tho high condition
ot the entire property.
This is justly considered a great
commercial triumph for southern
industry, and practical proof that
the south can make cloth cheaper
than Now England, whero tho busi-
ness lias been conducted at
a great loss. “If,” writes
ihe editor of the Rural Southerner,

It is the desire of tho Cresset to
impress upon the minds of capitalists
tho sure and sate invest-
ment in cotton factories when located
near tho producing region; and that
Denison is ono of the mo -t eligible
points in tho entiro South for tins
branch of industry. A hall million
dollars invested in a cotton manu-
factory at Denison, would prove not
only a sale, but a paying investment,
We urge upon our citizen* the im-

capital to this inviting field. The
very day that a cotton or other ex-
