TUESDAY..........JANUARY13,1880.
The matters of difference existing
between the Tammany Hall democ-
racy of the state of New York and
the Tilden Robinson wing of the
party, which lost to us that state in
November election, have been com-
promised. This can be but gratify-
ing to the democracy of the whole
country. By the terms of the agiee-
ment the delegation from the Empire
State to the next national convention
will not be committed to any candi-
date, but pledged, on the contrary,
to vote as a unit in favor of the man
seeming to have the greatest strength
with the representatives from other
states.
The Toronto Mail, in speaking ot
Grant, says : His character as a gen-
eral may be summed up ina phrase—
a recklessness in sacrificing human
life worthy of the first Napoleon.
He assumed the command before
Richmond when his courageous foes,
always numerically inferrior, were
worn out, and yet he sent army after
army to destruction in vain. He fi-
nally conquered, because he had no
enemy left to contend with him. As
president, he w’as the head of the
most corrupt governmental system
ever witnessed in the United States,
and lie was the special patron and
defender of all the infamous acts
perpetrated during his eight years’
presidency. Yet such is the man
whom Americans delight to honor
as though he were a demi-god—a
Wellington and a Justinian rolled
into one.
The will of the late Senator Chan-
dler was found a few days since
among the papers of the late James
M. Edmunds, of Washington, by
whom it had evidently been forgot-
ten, inasmuch as he was ill at the
time of Mr. Chandler’s death. The
will was executed on the 31st of
March, 1S65, and the subscribing
witnesses are Geo. S. Swift and D.
II. Jsromc. It covers one of
foolscap and simply bequeaths all the
estate in equal portions to Mrs.
Chandler and her daughter, now
Mrs. Eugene Hale. It names as ex
editors Charles Ducharme (now
dead), Allen Sheldon and George
Jerome. Letters will issue to the
two last named. The estate is val-
ued at $2,500,000. of which $1,800,-
000 is in securities that can be dis-
posed of at a premium.
Mr. Beecher replies to the criti-
cism ot the Bible Society on his dec-
laration that the present Bible is full
of errors, saying that the society is
culpable in permitting all the mis-
takes in typography, spelling, punc-
tuation, evil grammar, headlines,
omissions, etc., to be set forth from
issue to issue among the people. He
adds: “Shall the King’s son be
sent abroad out at the elbows, with
patches on knees, and with tatters
all over, on the the plea that his
clothes do not affect his bodily
health
SPECIAL LOCALS.
Thirty Years’ Experience of an

physicians and nurses in the United
States, and lias been used for thirty years

teething or from any other cause. Pull

Guard Against Consumption.
That life destoying scourge, by prompt-
ly subduing with the aid of Parker’s
Ginger Tonic every attack of Cough, Cold
or Soie Throat. Theie is nothing like it.
Acting powerfully upon the blood and
skin, and the mucous surfaces of throat
and lungs, it speedily overcomes these
dangerous disorders, prevents the devel-
opment of the dreaded Consumption, and
removes all pain and soreness from the
lungs. It is wonderfully efficadious in
Dyspeptic afflictions, and gives the most
comforting relief from Headache, Distress
in the Stomach, Nervousness, Low Spir-
its, Wakefulness, Palpitation of the Heart,
Heartburn, etc. It regulates the Bowels,
corrects both unnatural looseness and
constipation and stimulates the Liver to

Prickly Ash Bitters
And MalarifUge,
'TNIESE BITTERS wiil prevent con-
X trading of chills and all malarial dis-
eases if properly used, by invigorating the
liver, toning the stomach, and regulating
the bowels and kidneys. It is a prepara-
tion from such vegetable extracts of
which the Prickly Ash constitutes a lead-
ing part, that enters into the regular pre-
scription practice of all medical men,
among whom Dr. Sherman is justly
classed as the successful compounder af
ter an experimental practice of 30 years,
as a complete antidote to all influences
which, if not arrested in time, terminate
in chills and fever or other malarial dis-
eases.
Though pleasant to the taste, it is not a
beverage, (as the extracts are held in so-
lution in pure Holland gin only) because
of its cathartic properties, and is therefore
an infallible remedy for habitual constipa-
tion.
I’lIE MALARIFUGE is a certain cure
for chills when once contracted. It has
never failed to effect a cure where the di-
rec'ions. which accompany each bottle,
are followed.
Druggists are hereby authorized to re-
fund the money to any party purchasing
who claims a cure is not effected, provid-
ing the directions are followed and the
empty bottle returned. For sale by all

A letter to the Chicago Times
from Goldsboro N. C., says the ex-
odus of negroes from that state to
Indiana is encouraged by politicians,
who hold out inducements to the
blacks as tempting as they are false.
Over two hundred of these dupes
left for the north on the 29th, and
several hundred ot leers will leave
next week.
The Stomach is Strengthened,
The liver regulated, the bowels put in
pioper order, the blood enriched and pu-
rified and the nervous system rendered
tranquil and vigorous by this inestimable |
family medicine and safe-guard against |
disease, which is, moreover, a most
agreeable and effective appetizer, and a
cordial peculiarly adapted to the wants
of the aged and infirm.

An independent republican move-
ment for the purpose of defeating
Gen. Grant's nomination has been
started at Washington, and the de-
tails of the movement, and the names
of the parties therein are promised in
a few days. The object is said to be
to centralize all the republican op-
position to Grant in ‘he country.
Sigmund Kauffman, a prominent
republican from New York, once a
candidate for lieutenant-governor, is
advising his fellow German-Ameri-
cans to set their faces sternly against
a third term for Grant. “If we must
have a strong government,” he says,
“let us return to Bismarck and his
