Vegetables Keep Better in
Garden Than Refrigerator

The garden is u better place to
keep vegetables fresh than the re-
frigerator. The- economy of a gar-
den is seldom considered from this
viewpoint but it is an important one.
There is no waste from storage.
The vegetables are kept at their
best quality while growing. They
may get over-mature if left too
long in the soil but they keep where
they grow, and only a quantity suf-
ficient for a meal need be gathered,
leaving the rest to remain in tip-top
condition for another day and an-
other meal.
A garden saves a lot of room in
the ice box and provides better qual-
ity vegetables than can possibly be
gathered from the refrigerator or
from the cold storage plant of the
grocery. Home-grown vegetables
do not suffer as do market supplies
from wilt from being left in the sun
and they are not passed through
hands of whose cleanliness and san-
itary condition there is grave suspi-
cion.
Home-grown vegetables are clean-
est, of best quality, and a real econ-
omy.

Early Yellow Cosmos
All America Winner
COURTS
j cprowl, 504 North Walnut, Slier-
i «
Cosmos Yellow Flare was one of
three silver medal winners in the
AU-American contest for new flow-
ers for 1942. We have become so
used to orange cosmos in northern
gardens in the last few years that
many do not remember when this
branch of the cosmos family was
possible only to gardens of the
deep south.
The reason was that the orange
and yellow cosmos, called Klon-
dike, took so long to blossom that
it was impossible to bring it to
flower in the north before killing
frosts arrived. Travelers would
bring back stories of its beauty,
but seed was sown in vain in all
states north of Dixie.
Then came a break, in 1933, when
C.smos Orange Flare was intro-
duced. This was an orange va-
riety of the Klondike which blos-
somed in midsummer in the north.
It v.as instantly popular and be-
came one of the best sellers. Now
Cosmos Yellow Flare is introduced,
giving flowers of rich golden yel-
low, blossoming in July.
Both Yellow and Orange Flare
are vigorous growers, each reaching
