Fire Hazards Of First Rank
And The Cure !
According to the National Board of
Fire Underwriters, there are live outstand-
ing fire hazards, which if the people
learned and acted in line with preventing
them the destruction and deaths wrought
by this monster enemy of man each year;
in America would be considerably cur- j
tailed.
Mentioned first is hazard of careless-
it goes on as among the greatest of the de-
stroying sources. The caution is to be sure
that all cast off stubs and matjhes are left
without any fire. Never throw any of tin
refuse into a waste basket. Always have
plenty of ash hays handy and use them
Store all matches vt^iere they are out of
tile reach of children. Never smoke while
in bed.
Heating plants are another prolific
source of fire—and' they constitute a haz-
ard which is at its worst this tine of year.
Chimeys and flues should be checked and
cleaned each year. Flue linings of fire
clay are essential for maximum safety.
Sagging or rusted stovepipes should be re-
paired, and smokepipes should be a safe
distance from combustibles. Over-heating
of stoves and furnaces is always a danger.
Never force the fire—if your heating plant
'.s not working satisfactorily, call in an ex-^
pert.
Misuse of electricity is still another
main cause of fire. Use standard fuses of
correct size only, and never use a, coin as
i substitute. Disconnect all heat-producing
appliances when leaving home. Have ex-
posed wiring inspected and if necessary
repaired by a qualified electrician—not by
an amateur.
Spontaneous ignition is one more of
fire’s may allies. It isn’t as mysterious an
it sounds. Oily and paint-stained rags or
should always be kept in tightly closed
mops are among the worst offenders, and
metal containers. And even papers and
similar rubbish have been known to bursl
into flames spontaneously. Keep all rooms
free of disorderly debris—and don’t forgot
the attic, basement and closests.
A cause of many deaths and serious
injuries is home cleaning with benzine |
naptha, gasoline and and similar explosive j
liquids. Send your cleaning out—that’: j
t<oth the cheapest and safest way in the j
long run.
Here are rules that will prevent most
fires. Preserve them and observe them— i
in bringing the Christmas decora-
tions, window adornment and
general welcoming of the holiday
season? It is only one straw
which shows how the winds or
working together to blow here.
