Keeping Denison’s Alleys
And Vacant Lots Clean
Denison 'lecds a campaign to cut the
weeds and grass in the alleys and on va-
cant lots.
Complaints are coming to the Press by
parties who sav that the situation is get-
ting unbearable with the vacant
lots adjoining property permitted to grow
grass and weeds without any attention.
In jsonp [cases conrplainers say tftie;
lots belong to parties living out of the city
and rather than see the unsightly lots, the
neighbor has at his own expense had the
weeds cut.
(There seems to be a lack of law to
handle such cases where there is absen-
tee ownership of the lots in question. In
some cities there is a law that gives the
city power to hire the weeds cut and then
apply it to the tax on the property.
This might be what is needed here to
handle a situation which seems to grow
more vexing.
We have now in force a law on
keeping the alleys clean, the city even
making collection of garbage at intervals
without cost to the public. The only
restriction is that the garbage and trash
shall be in > containers of some kind.
There should be a fuither law against
the indiscriminate throwing of trash in
the alley and demanding that it be placed
in containers.
Further, there should be frequent
enough trips made, if there is not now such
frequency, 1o keep the alleys clean. A
dirty alley is as bad as a dirty street out
front, since the spread of disease can come
from the alley as easily as it can from the
front or any other source.
Let’s keen the alley and vacant lots in
Denison dean and make it a sanitary and
beautiful town.
