NEWS IN WORLD
OF RELIGION
By W. W. REID
Dr. Ralph E. Diffendorfer, presi-
dent of the Japan International
phristian University Foundation, has
nnounced that Admiral William F.
(ret.), who commanded the
drd Fleet in the Pacific Area, has
come chairman for the Atlantic
oast states (Maryland to Florida)
in the forthcoming campaign to raise
$10,000,000 for the building and or-
ganization of the proposed Christian
university near Tokyo. The cam-
paign will last from Easter to June
of 1950.
Speaking recently to a group of
Roman Catholic lawyers gathered in
Rome, Pope Pius XII reminded them
that their religion forbids them to
recognize'or to enforce laws that are
unjust and contrary to the concepts
of Christianity. The Catholic lawyer,
said the Pope, “must never formally
recognize and approve an unjust law

Christmas
Greetings
Christmas Is a good
time, a pleasant time
—the one day In the
long calendar of the
year when people
everywhere lay aside the cares of the
every day world.
With gay tidings all around us and
with the blessings of the Christmas
season so greatly in evidence, let us
all acclaim the Yuletide and welcome
it with a sincere and I.^c.ifelt hap-
piness.
May all of us in our own way observe
the customs essential to a joyous and
successful Christmas Season.

| The “rural residents” constitute
the new rural problem: they come
from many religious and social back-

| little left for church or community, j
| “Churches in the midst of people j
i with such diverse interests and re-1
j ligious backgrounds must become
| community churches," says Dr. Beck-
er.
"They should keep their denomln-
: atlonal affiliation but should de-
velop what someone called a ‘com-
munity atmosphere' in their local
fellowship. Specialized religious
workers with children and with fam-
ilies are needed. A diversified staff
will probably be possible only as
churches cooperate in larger parishes
across denominational lines. The
church will work at a losing task un-
less it can develop among farmer,
laborer, professional worker and all
diverse elements a sense of common
interest and loyalty to community.”

Methodist Church, Dr. J. S. Ryang,
of Seoul, has been elected president

Within the lifetime of many Fil-
ipinos, great changes have come in
the social, educational, and economic
conditions of the Philippine Islands,
says the Rev. J. B. Holt, of Anson,
Texas, Methodist missionary In Ma-
nila. This one Filipino has seen the
change, he says, “from complete dic-
tatorship of the Spanish hierarchy
to religious freedom and democracy
. . Filipino life has improved
also: the .average Filipino is four
inches taller than his great-grand-
father, and infant mortality has
dropped from 80 per 100 births to
less than 14 deaths per 100."
According to Miss Glora M. Wys-
ner, Ph.D. secretary of the Interna-
tional Missionary Council, who re-
cently returned from the Near East,
there are more than 1,000,000 refuges
in need In the area around Bethle-
hem, Palestine. Most of them are
children; many are orphans. “The
flight from their homes took place
in the intense heat of the summer
ot 1948,” says MlsS Wysner. “Not
even temporary provisions had been
made for such a flight.
The refugees, exhausted, fright-
ened, hungry, many of them ill,
sheltered under the olive trees, in
caves, wherever they felt they could
be safe. The rains came before suf-
ficient clothing, tents, and blankets
could be secured for them. Hundreds
of schools employing refugee teach-
ers could be opened if only we had
sufficient funds to provide the teach-
ers and equipment. The few schools
for refugee children need to be aug-
mented by hundreds.”

Dr. Becker points out that this
