THESE ARE MANY
FALSE BELIEFS
ABOUT CANCER
Some peonle '.-j'ieve that a single
injury, such as a blow In the breast
can cause cancer.
Some believe that cancer is heredi-
tary, that'parents pass it on to their
Children.
Many believe that cancer is gener-
ally incurable, and that there is
nothing the individual can do to
protect himself and his family.
All these false beliefs and many
others are dealt with in the first five
of a series of popular pamphlets on I
cancer, publication of which is an-
nounced by John L. Thurston, act-
ing Federal Security Agency Admin- j
istrator.
, The pamphlets, which were pre- j
| pared by the National Cancer Insti-
j t-ute of the National Institutes of
! Health, Public Health Service, em-,
! phasize that early cancer is fre-
j tiuently accompanied by warning
| signs and symptoms, and that per-
sons who can recognize them and
obtain prompt medical attention can
usually be cured.
The first of the publications, CAN-
CER — WHAT TO KNOW, WHAT
TO DO ABOUT IT, is an illustrated i
folder that describes the cancer pro-1
cess, the known facts about its causes
and approved methods of treatment,
and lists the most usual signs of pos-
sible early cancer. As listed in the
folder, these include:
1. Any lump, especially in the
breast.
2. Irregular bleeding or discharge
from body opening.
3. Persistent indigestion.
4. Unexplained changes in bowel
movements.
5. Unexplained weight-loss.
6. Changes in color or size of
mole.
7. Any sore that does not heal
promptly.
The other four pamphlets, which
were prepared in cooperation with
the American Cancer Society, dis-
cuss in simple, interesting language
but with scientific accuracy the es-
sential facts about cancer of specific
sites of the body. One of these is
cancer of the breast, a second is on
female reproductive organs, a third
n the digestive tract, and a fourth
on the mouth and respiratory tract.
Later pamphlets in the series will
discuss cancer of the genito-urinary
tract and skin cancer.
"Through personal alertness to the
igns and symptoms of early cancer,
the American people could prevent
up to 100,090 unnecessary cancer
deaths a year,” according to Surgeon
General Leonard A. Scheele of the
Public Health Service. "Without be-
oming a nation of cancerphobes, we
can learn and apply the few simple
