STATEHOOD’S ANNIVERSARY
It was 100 years ago Saturday,
Dec. 29, that Texas became the
28th state In the Union. That
date, the United States Supreme
Court has held, marked the actual
annexation, as congress accepted
the state constitution approved
Several months earlier by Tex&s
voters.
It was seven weeks later, on Feb.
16, 1846, that Anson Jones ceased
to be president of the Texas re-
public, and J. Pinckney Henderson
became governor. The lone Star
ceased to exist as a national flag.
It is not clear to the casual read-
er of history what Texas' govern-
mental status was, during the sev-
en-week Interval. It ceased on
Dec. 29 to be an Independent re-
public, because the United States
Congress had accepted it as a
state. But It did not assume the
functions of statehood until mld-
February.
Proper regard for the technical-
ities probably would have caused
establishment of a provisional state
government, to administer affairs
until state officers could be elected
and installed. That was not done,
and the officers of the republic
continued to serve.
