DEATH LURKS ON STREETS
(Contributed)
A small mangled body was thrown
to the roadside by the car wheels
of a hit-and-run driver. It was
only a pet dog of a small boy but
for all the concern of the driver It
might have been the boy. Three
children playing in the yard wit-
nessed the “accident,” if you wish
to so term such malicious driving.
Only by chance, the dog was cross-
ing the road instead of one of the
three innocent children. This dog
had never run a car, had been train-
ed not to do so. He, as is often
the case, was an innocent victim of
uncalled-for recklessness.
Is there not some way to appeal
to the drivers that tear through the
aide streets of Shamrock endanger-
ing the lives of innocent children?
The weeping child for his lost
friend and playmate Is a pitiful
sight to behold, but it is a small
and trivial thing compared to see-
ing a mother and father bent over
the mangled form of their only
child.
If sentiment and public entreaty
cannot appeal to this greatest of
public enemies, let’s have a traffic
cop In Shamrock to jail and de-
prive of driving privileges some of
our careless, indifferent drivers.

Be careful what you say, you’re
on a "Parly Wire” and will the gos-
sip start! Victor Jory nnd Jean
Arthur are starred in this comedy
drama of small town life among
scandalmongers.
Showing Wednesday night only,
“Party Wire" is a human story of
young lovers being torn apart by
malicious gossip. A bit of news sent
over a party wire is translated into
a choice bit of scandal by several
listen-iners.
Jory is cast as the town’s most
eligible bachelor. After seven years’
absence he returns to take charge
of the family dairies which are the
backbone of industry in the small
middlewestern town.
Miss Arthur portrays the one un-
married girl in Rockridge who
doesn’t try to snare Jory but in-
stead -she finds ways and means of
annoying him which most times
only succeed in amusing him. How-
ever she soon learns that love Is
much more important than playing
pranks or taking digs. They are
soon engaged much to the disgust
of the town’s belle, played by Gene-
va Mitchell, who is out to capture
_ Jory.
Jory’s invalid aunt is played by
Helen Lowell, and Charley Grape-
win, long a favorite of vaudeville,
is featured as Jean Arthur’s father,
a lovable n’er-do-well. It is a hu-
morous role, one especially suited to
the droll Grapewin.
Clara Blandick and Maude Eburne
are Importantly cast, with Miss
Blandick as the gossip-spreading
mother of Geneva Mitchell, and
Maude Eburne as a very able assist-
ant in the spreading of unfounded
rumors.
“Party Wire" is an adaptation by
Ethel Hill and John Howard Law-
son of Bruce Manning’s best-selling
novel. The direction is by Erie Ken-
ton.
Included in the capable support-
ing cast are Matt McHugh, Robert
Allen, Oscar Apfel and Robert Mid-
dlemass.
