Seventh Grade;
Play Outstanding
Defensive Game
By MRS. CHARLES GRAGG
A stalwart Irish defense played
a big role in the seventh grace
I game with Childress played at El
Paso Field last Thur day afternoon.
I The local lads were defeated, 12-
j 0, by the big visiting team. Ear-
i Her in the season, in a game played
| it Childress, the lirile Irishmen
came out on the short end of a
30-14 score.
| The Childress club took the open-
| ing kick-off and proceeded to j
Div.ich the length of the field.j
From tlie 1-yard line they plunged'
ovt r for their first score.
The white clad boys recovered a
quarterback fumble on the 32-yard
line in the second quarter and again
marched down the field for their
second TD. The Irish defense held
on both occasions to nullify the
extra points, and (lie half-time
;cure was: Childress 12, shamrock
The second half saw the Sham-
rack defense coming to the front,
to contain the much laager boys
from the south. John Coffman and
Carrol Henry each recovered a
Childress fumble in the second
ju trier.
Tlie third quarter was played on
even terms with Ricky Gragg re-
covering a fumble on the 40-yard
line as the quarter ended to give
Shamrock possession going into the
fourth stanza.
Paul Wilson took the ball, drop-
ped buck and fired a pass to Don-
ald Lee to move the Irish to the
Childress 40-yard line. From there
Shamrock moved the ball to the
37. John Coffman took the ball on
i keeper nnd raced to the 4-yard
line, but the little Bobcats dug in
and the Irish were unable to score.
Plibip Range carried the ball on
one fine run in the fourth quarter,
galloping from the 37 to the 10,
but again the Childress defense
kept the Irish from crossing to
pay dir'.
Shamrock's offense was unable to
click. Donald Lee was hampered by
a broken hand sustained in the
game with QUanah. Range was
moved from guard to wingback on
offense.
Coach Don Fritche said: "I was
proud of the entire team. I felt
that while we were playing against
I boys our own age. we were able to
! 'push them all over the field. The
tra in played well and we have
nothing to be ashamed of.
"The Ricky’s played outstanding
defense and Philip did a fine job
on offense. Donald Lee was below
nor bee (Use of his injured hand,
j but we think he will be ready to
i go against Groom tonight (Thurs-
! day). The team spirit was high for
it he game and stayed up during the
; entire contest."
The seventh graders will travel
| to Groom this afternoon for a
j game starting at 6 p in.
! Bill Clifton, student at McMurry
College, was at home Friday for a
| visit with hi parents, Mr. and Mrs.
, Louis Linville.
