DRILLING BOOM IS TRIGGERED
92 Locations Filed In
Area Around Shamrock
The most extensive drilling
program in the 40-year history
of the state-line oil and gas
field was made known last
week through filings with the
Pampa office of the Texas
Railroad Commission.
The listings included a whop-
ping 92 intentions to drill —
77 in northeastern Collings-
worth County and 15 In Wheeler
County. One application was
made to plug-back, and one
well was completed — both In
Wheeler County
El Dorado Oil & Gas Com-
pany of Borger, a joint venture
of Bob Covington of Sham-
rock and Spradling Drilling
Company and Travellers
Oil Company, both of Bur-
ger, filed a 78-well develop-
ment program In an area from
4 to 12 nnles southeast of
Shamrock.
The company plans to keep
one rig working all the time
with two rigs going part of the
time.
The program is described as
a two-year project. Wells will
be drilled on both 10 and 20-
acre patterns. All of the tests
are proposed oil wells
El Dorado moved into the
east Shamrock field some two
years ago and already has sev-
eral wells in the area.
Following up an announce-
ment made last week, Don
Earney of Wheeler filed in-
tentions to drill eight wells
southwest of Shamrock in Col-
lingsworth County. The leases
are farm-outs from El Paso
Natural Gas Company, and the
wells are to be completed by
January 1, 1966.

Support Of Their Merger Plans
IH-40 Project
To Be Started
Within 30 Days
A contract for $5,280,969.32
for the construction of 14.925
miles of Interstate Highway 40
west of Shamrock has been
awarded to an Amarillo firm,
Cooper & Woodruft, Inc. &
Warren Bros.
The low bid was accepted by
the State Highway Commission
in Austin and is subject- to the
concurience of the Bureau of
Public Roads.
The project calls for grading,
structures, foundation course,
asphalt stabilizer base, con-
crete [saving and the construc-
tion of a safety rest area.
The entire project Is expected
to take 450 working days, ac-
cording to V. J. McGee, Dis-
trict Highway Engineer at
Childress.
L. Clyde Drake, resident en-
gineer at Wellington, will be in
active charge of the project
while it Is under construction.
Work will be started early next
month. Mr. Drake said.
The stretch of highway will
extend from .89 of a mile west
of the Fort Worth & Denver
Cltv Railroad underpass in
Shamrock to the Gray County
line. The construction will be
north of the present west-
bound traffic lane
This was the first Interstate
project to be let to contract
In the Highway Department's
District 25, a 12-county area
which Includes Wheeler Coun-
ty.
The project will be the first
section of Interstate 40 to link
Oklahoma and Texas, and con-
stitutes about half of District
25's Interstate work, excluding
about 5.5 miles on IH-40 in
Donley County.
The contract awarded last
week calls for almost half a
million square yards of con-
tinuous reinforced concrete
pavement and includes three
complete interchanges and one
grade separation Safety rest
areas will be built for eacli di-
rection of traffic

W. G. Copeland
Funeral services for Wilson
Grant Copeland, 47. membt-i
of a pioneer Shamrock area
family, died Fnday morning in
the Veterans Hospital at Am-
arillo.
Born February 19. 1918, ii:
Shamrock, Mr. Copeland lived
here until 10 years ago. He
had worked for the Amarillo
Water Department for the
past nine years
Mr Copeland was a veteran
of World War II and a mem-
ber of the Antioch Missionary
Baptist Church of Amarillo.
Funeral services were held at
2 p.m. Monday in the Antioch
Missionary Baptist Church
with the Rev. James R Craw-
ford officiating. Burial was In
Memorial Park Cemetery with
Blatkburn-Shaw Funeral Home
In charge of arrangements.
Survivors include: his wife,

Final rites for Louis David
Langley, 77. retired farmer and
long-time resident of the
Shamrock area, were held at
2:30 p.m. Saturday in tiie Biolr
Methodist Church.
Mr. Langley, Route 2, Sham-
rock, died at 5 a.m. Wednesday.

as Hospital. Amarillo He was
transferred to the Amarillo
hospital from Shamrock Gen-
eral Hospital the day before.
Hr had been in ill health for
some three years.

A native of Missouri, Mr
Davis was born August 30,
1888, and was married In Mem-
phis on October 8, 1911, to
Miss Fannie Mae Walker. They

Island Railroad properties, in-

serve this city.

action on Santa Fes request
lor an endorsement of their
proposal. Both groups agreed
to make a study of the com-

again on Monday, January 10,
1966.

terstate Commerce Commission

proposed merger or control of
the Rock Island Railroad,
In one of the proceedings,
the Union Pacific and the
Southern Pacific art- seeking
permission to divide the Rock
Island between themselves
In the other proceeding, the
Chicago and North Western
Railway Company is applying
for authority to acquire stock
control of the Rock Island, and
as part of that transaction,
Santa Ft proposes to purchase
certain of the Rock Island
propet ties south of Kansas
City and to secure trackage
rights over the Rock Island
line between Kansas City and
St. Louis.

Resident Dies
Spurgeon Morgan, 57, Rum-
or long-time resident of
Shamrock, died suddenly about
8:30 a.m. Monday at his home.
1513 Dalhart Street, Welling-
ton.
Funeral services were con-
ducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday
in the First Baptist Church of
Wellington, with the Rev A B
Earnest, Jr , pastor, officiating.
Arrangements were under
ttie direction of Kelso Funeral
Home of Wellington.
Burial was in Shamrock
Cemetery under the direction
of Richerson Funeral Home.
Mr. Morgan, a farmer, was
born February 28. 1908, til Pa-
ducah, and moved lrom that
town to Shamrock In 1919 On
September 19, 1946, he was
married in Shamrock to Miss
Eula Mae Burk of this city. The
couple moved to Wellington on
January 1, 1952.
Mr. Morgan was a veteran of
World War II and a member
of the First Baptist Church ot
Shamrock

The 1966 government cot-
ton program will be explained
at a meeting scheduled for
7:30 o'clock tonight (Thursday 1
in the district court room in
the court house at Wheeler.
Lewis Grayson, Wheeler
County ASCS office manager,
will explain the program.
"We would like to remind all
cotton farmers that January
3, 1966, is the deadline foi
signing up with the Wheelti
County ASCS office for cot-
ton allotment ownership trans-
fer and lease or sale of cotton
allotments within Wheeler
County," said Charles D.
Jackson, county agent.
"Ownership transfer may be
made outside of Wheeler Coun-
ty, but lease and sale must re-
main within the county," the

sistance, a grant was not ap-
proved last year and the re-
quest was renewed for consid-
eration this year.
