Texas Wildlife
By IB R- Long
What is a wildlife biologist?
A wildlife biologist is something
that was once known only to
those who were actually biolo-
gists, or else to those who hap-
pened to see the term used in
an article in a magaalne or
newspaper. Now we "have come
to know them a little better, and
to appreciate them' for the ser-
vice they perform.
What is a wildlife biologist?
First of all, he may be the man
next door. He lives in your
town, pays his taxes where
yours are paid, sends his chil-
dren to the school that yours at-
tend, and he wears a suit when
he goes to church on Sunday
and sits down right across the
aisle from you.
On weekdays he doesn’t wear
a suit. He wears khakis and a
pair of field boots. During the
week he is a scientist seeking
the answer to prepiexing prob-
lems. He is college or universi-
ty trained to seek such answers,
often leaving the explanation of
those facts to, the information
and facs.
He knows that man wishes to
manage his wildlife resources,
and before this can be dcjpe we
must have knowledge about in-
fluences on these resources. De-
pending on him is the game
warden, the sportsman, the
wildlife manager an®, the natu-
ralist. Also dependinF’on him is
the merchant who sells outdoor
equipment, the man who sells
the gasoline used in the sports
man’s car, the man who sells
bait and rents boat and motor.
Factors that causes wildlife to
increase or decrease must be
fully known, and this is the job
of the biologist.
He studies habitat improve-
ment, for that is the key to
wildlife abundance. He looks
back on his work of stocking,
predator control, managed ref-
uges, extremes of protection,
and profits thereby, but he looks
forward to improved habitat con-
ditions. He knows that the habi-
tat must have quality as well as
quantity, and his back bends as
his brow furrows toward this
goal.
He is a very average person,
with a very unusual talent, and
he is a kissin’ cousin to ecology,
zoology, botany, chemistry,
math, physics, entomology, or-
nithology, icthyology, limnology,
and dozens of related science^.
He studies continuously for our
welfare outdoors.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hamilton of
Odessa were weekend visitors in
the Walter Hamilton home.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hamilton
are visiting in the home of Rob-
ert Earl Hamilton in Midland.

No longer does the angler see
the mammoth 600-pound 18-foot
alligators of th$ past. But more
than 30 counties in East Texas
still boast a population ranging
from a few to many.
Parks and Wildlife Depart-
ment Fisheries Supervisor,
Charles Gray, reports many ga-
tors have been seen out of win-
ter hibernation already near La
Rue. And angers around Gil-
mer have discovered some ear-
