division, and was on frdnt line duty
for a period of forty-seven days In the

The letter was written from Graach.
Germany under date of April 9th and
expressed the hope that his division
would soon return home. There was
much of lntsrest In the letter* a pert
of which was as follows: “Guess
army life agrees with me, aa I now

than 1 ever before weighed. But In
spite of this I can’t nay that I like it
and will welcome the time when d can

Wp have had some good times togeth-
er, especially at Coblens. where we
1x)k In many historic sights, many of
which we had read of but had never
expected to eee. We shall never for-
get them and have secured post cards
of many of the most noted places that
we shall send home. One of these
eights was the castle of the Kaiser at
Coblens on the Rhine. We wen*
through this superb and well ap-
pointed structure. The keeper and
hie family had been promised by the
Kaiser to be relieved on April 1st of
ilb-fthlB year, but the keeper is still there
and the Kaiser does not show his
face. The castle was built In the 13th
century. The whole beauty of this
place, the Rhine, the cliffs and the
castles, is beyond description.
We are having plenty of good eats
now and enjoying ourselves, but we
are all longing to see home and the
folks. Y
We have walked practically all over
France, Luxemburg and quite a bit of
Germany, carrying about a hundred
pounds of equipment, so when we re-
turn we shall expect to ride a little
and cut out some of the walking.”

Bob Easley returned Tuesday from
overseas, where he was attached to
the fighting 32nd division composed
primarily of Michigan and Wisconsin
national guardsmen who were trained
at Waco. Bob made the second effort
before he finally got by the rigid ex-
amination at Camp Travis. In Octo-
ber 1917 he went first to Camp with
an entrainment from Erath county.
At the time he lacked a few pounds
of reaching the minimum require-
ments of 110 pounds. He wanted to
go however and the spirit and pep
of the young man, the local board
though: was ample to make up the
deficiency in weight and he would
make good if he could get by the ex-
amination at camp. The camp ex-
aminers did not know of this pep
like the local board did and he was
promptly rejected because of Insuffi-
cient weight. Bob told them a few
Idlings though right then and besides
he took up residence in San Antonio
and from time to time went before
the local board there for examination,
meanwhile doing hl« best to Increase
weight. Finally he passed examina-
tion -by the local board at San An-
tonio and upon receipt of the exami-
nation ihe local board In Erath coun-
ty again Issued papers for his Induc-
tion at Camp Travis. June 28th, 1918.
This time he ‘'stuck," as the word
goes among the army folks. After
three weeks In the medical detention
camp at Travis, he was sent to Camp
Beauregard. La., where he remained
but a brief time, then ito Camp Mills.
New York, and then overseas without
special assignment and less than
three months after Induction Into the
service. Arriving In France he was
placed In a training division and had
Just three weeks to his credit when
he was assigned to the replacement
section of the 32nd division, -which
was then struggling forward on the
front along the Meuse. This mean-
immediate front line duty and from
that time until the armistice was
signed Bob was with tho front line
forces. He reports haring three
times had the experience of going
over tho top. He was uninjured by
either bulloU or gas, hut took tip with
a prevalent skin disease of the Ger-
mans which kept him with many hun-
dreds of others in a hospital in Ger-
many for three week*.
