‘Temple Trails’
teaches families to
‘bring Judaism home’
By MICHAEL C. DUKE
An innovative program for
kindergarten families paints a different
picture of what Jewish life can look and
be like.
Making Judaism a habit, rather than
approaching it from an observance
point of view, is at the core of
Congregation Emanu El’s new “Temple
Trails” program.
The program is part of Emanu El
Helfman Religious School’s 2012-
’13 kindergarten curriculum, but it’s
also open to nonreligious school and
unaffiliated families for a fee.

to provide basic Jewish literacy skills, so

UH coach Levine takes pride in family, football
By MATT SAMUELS
Tony Levine has two very
important, time-consuming jobs.
During the day, Levine is under
the national spotlight as the head
coach at one of the top college
football programs in the state.
At night, he, along with his wife,
Erin, manage a different team -
their four young children ages 1,
3, 5 and 7.
Talk about doing double duty
Levine, the University of
Houston’s first and the nation’s
only Jewish Division I-A college
football coach, is thriving in both
roles. As he prepares to begin his
first full season as head coach on
Sept. 1, the key to his success is
no secret.
“I’m a big family guy, and
that is something people are
starting to see,” Levine told the
JHV. “When you look through the
Jewish culture and traditions,
family is such an important part
of living. It’s something that my
parents always emphasized, and
it’s something that has always
been important to me.”
“I think our players have
already taken notice that we are
going to run our program with
