Young Israel schedules scholar in residence program
Young Israel of Houston will
host Rabbi Avraham Greenbaum
as its scholar in residence Nov. 14
and 15.
Born in Britain in 1949, Rabbi
Greenbaum gained his MA in classics
and social sciences at Cambridge
University. As a Harkness Fellow he
studied at Harvard and Columbia,
after which he spent four years as a
BBC radio news commentator and
producer.
A lifelong yearning for spirituality
led to his return to Torah. In 1980
Rabbi Greenbaum moved to Israel
with his wife and family and settled
in Jerusalem, where he was ordained
in 1988.
Rabbi Greenbaum is a world-
renowned teacher on Kabbalah,
Chassidut, Healing and Environment.
He maintains the Azamra website and
teaches at the Tiferet Study Center in
Jerusalem and on tour throughout
Israel, Britain, the United States and
Canada.
His books include “Rabbi Nach-
man’s Advice,” “Under the Table
& How to Get Up,” a handbook
of Jewish pathways of spiritual
growth, “Wings of the Sun: The
Torah Healing Tradition in Theory
and Practice” and translations of
Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto’s
Kabbalistic classics, “Secrets of the
Future Temple” and “138 Openings
of Wisdom.”
After a communal Shabbat dinner
at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14, Rabbi
Greenbaum will deliver his first
lecture at 8 p.m. titled “The Wings
of the Sun: Torah Healing Wisdom.”
On Shabbat morning, services will
be followed by Kiddush and Rabbi
Greenbaum’s second lecture at 11:30
a.m., titled “Under the Table & How
to Get Up.”
Rabbi Greenbaum’s third lecture
at 4 p.m. is titled “Meah Shearim &
The 21st Century.” After Shabbat,
there will be a Melva Malka at 8 p.m.
Rabbi Greenbaum will play the key-
board, sing, tell inspiring stories and
share Torah thoughts.
The community is invited to
attend parts or all of the program.
There is no charge for the lectures or
Melava Malka. For dinner reserva-
tions and information, contact Alan
Kellerman at 713-623-2861. □
Blood drive to salute
U.S. veterans
Community National Bank, VFW
Post 5619 and the Rotary Club of
Bellaire/Southwest Houston ask
citizens to roll up their sleeves and
donate blood for the sixth annual
blood drive saluting U.S. veterans
Saturday, Nov. 8, from 9 a.m. to
noon. The Gulf Coast Regional
Blood Center mobile unit will be
stationed in front of the bank, 5123
Bellaire Blvd. at S. Rice. “Thousands
of individuals responded to the call
for blood donations after Hurricane
Ike. However, it is important that
individuals Commit for Life and help
ensure that an adequate blood supply
is available at all times,” said Randy
Dobbs, CNB chair/CEO. “When a
disaster, like Hurricane Ike, occurs,
it is the blood already on the shelf
that helps save lives,” he noted.
More than 900 blood donations are
needed every day for patients in the
Texas Gulf Coast region - from accident
victims to cancer patients to premature
babies. According to The Blood Center,
one pint of blood is needed every 1.3
seconds.
Blood donors must be 17 or older
(16 with parental consent), weigh a
minimum of 110 pounds (122 pounds
for age 16), in general good health
without cold or flu symptoms and
must bring a valid photo ID prior to
the donation.
Potential donors may register at
www.giveblood.org, using sponsor code
J096, said Brian Tave, a Rotarian and
CNB senior vice president and lending
officer, who is spearheading the blood
drive. □
