Rodfei Sholom Synagogue. Rabbi
Aryeh Scheinberg of Rodfei Sholom
is credited with enabling the event’s
creation.
Pastor Hagee founded A Night
to Honor Israel at his San Antonio
church in 1981, and a similar event
is now held in more than 80 cities
across the country. Throughout the
year, John Hagee Ministries raises
money for Jewish and Israeli causes
and distributes it at the annual event
The pastor, four weeks ago, under-
went open-heart surgery. This year’s
A Night to Honor Israel was his first
public appearance after the surgery.
While he is still in recovery, his son,
Pastor Matthew Hagee, spoke on
behalf of his father.
Wunsch said Pastor Matthew
Hagee’s speech made the event even
more special: “It was nice to know
that there is a next generation with a
similar strong commitment to Israel.”
Attendees agreed they were
impressed both with Pastor Matthew
Hagee’s speech and Michael Oren,
author and senior fellow at The
Shalem Center in Jerusalem. Oren
spoke about the history of support
for the Jewish people by non-Jews in
America. He is the author of several
bestsellers, including “Power, Faith
and Fantasy” and “Six Days of War.”
“I thought it was wonderful. I
get chills seeing so many Christians
united for Israel,” Karen Propis said.
“It gives me hope to know that we
are not alone. In our world and in
the press we are alone, but when
we come to Cornerstone we are not
alone.”
Cantor David Propis said he has
been attending the Night to Honor
Israel for 25 years and “I have a deep
respect and admiration for Pastor
Hagee - what he does and what he
stands for. He has led by example.”
First-time attendee Leonard
Goldstein said, “It was an amazing
event, absolutely amazing. To be in
a filled auditorium like that with so
much support and love for the state
of Israel and people of such diver-
sity expressing unity with the Jewish
people was just awe-inspiring.”
First-time attendee Elise Sheppard
was equally impressed. “I’ve faced so
much anti-Semitism in my life, so it’s
nice to feel support from the non-
Jewish community,” she said.
A highlight of the evening was
when John Hagee Ministries donated
$9.5 million to 23 different Israeli
and Jewish organizations, including
$2 million to Migdal Ohr to care for
Israeli orphans and needy children;
$1 million to Barzilai Hospital in
Ashkelon for a bomb-proof medical
children’s unit; $500,000 to Herzog
Hospital for construction of an out-
patient medical wing; and $100,000
to the Jewish Agency for Israel for
educational and social services for
young immigrants.
Leah Maloul, spokesperson
and public affairs for the Barzilai
Medical Center Ashkelon, said she
was moved by the donation. “We are
sitting on the border with Gaza, very
deserted and alone, dwelling with
rocket attacks. Unfortunately, we are
also waiting for more bad times to
come, so the tremendous support we
have received tonight from Pastor
Hagee and the Jewish Federation of
Houston is a miracle from G-d,” she
said.
John Hagee Ministries also
gave $250,000 to the Federation’s
annual United Jewish Campaign,
which supports many local Jewish
organizations, including the Jewish
Community Center, Seven Acres
Jewish Senior Care Services Inc.,
Houston Hillel, Jewish day schools
and many more. □
