The Untermeyers returned to
Houston in 2007. Diana goes back
to Qatar many times a year - to
work on her book, for weddings,
for public events. She’s bullish on
Qatar’s future. It’s a nation where
the GDP has risen from $8 billion
in 1995 to an estimated $173 bil-
lion. The country now attracts $100
billion in investments annually.
A number of American schools -
including Texas A&M University
and Houston Community College
have created joint partnerships
which are expected to bring jobs
and research into the country.
“They don’t want to create a
highly educated people without
jobs,” said Untermeyer. “And, they
also want to diversify the economy.
They have the advantage of wealth.
But, they also realize this wealth
should provide opportunities
throughout the Arab world. There
are students who come from other
parts of the Arab world. The emir
has said there’s no excuse not to
succeed. Great leaders aren’t afraid
to have great people around them.
He’s happy for the people around
him to get the credit for their
achievements.” □

thousands of school supplies into over 3,500 backpacks given to The Spring
Branch Development Center’s children and then, painted their faces, while
they waited in the hot summer sun at the Back To School Health Fair. Mario
worked the concession stand during field day at the Yellowstone Academy, an
elementary school for underprivileged children. She baked cookies to raise
money for Citizens for Animal Protection. Mario decorated placemats for the
