Burt Kunik and Bryan Miller and Elyse
Ted Dinerstein Kalmans
Jewish Family Service’s Employ-
ment Services department held a
Working Lunch in December to
highlight the agency’s commitment
to strengthen its employment service
program. More than 35 Houston Jewish
businessmen and women attended.
The JFS Career Resource Center,
which opened on Jan. 10, is the first
step toward the 99-year-old social
service agency’s commitment to add
more resources for those seeking
employment. The center is housed at
the agency, 4131 S. Braeswood Blvd.
Opening the luncheon, Linda
Burger, JFS chief executive officer,
explained the current Employment
Services program, which is coor-
dinated by part-time employee, Elyse
Spector Kalmans. “Since 2008, the
Employment Services program was
started by a grant from the Economic
Assistance Fund, created by the Jew-
ish Federation of Greater Houston, as
the serious downturn in the economy
began. As the EAF came to a close,
the Federation allocated the remain-
ing funds to continue Kalmans’ posi-
tion for the next two years,” Burger
told the business leaders.
Burger noted that additional
funds for the Employment Services
program have been secured from the
Sam Roosth Foundation of Tyler and
individuals committed to helping get
our community back to work. “But,
with the growing of unemployed
and underemployed continuing to
seek our services, I was gratified to
received a call from Burt Kunik, a
wonderful volunteer, who suggested
it’s time to do something really
significant in this area ... and, here
we are today!” she noted as she
introduced Kunik.
Kunik, a retired dentist and
businessman, explained what is needed
to make this full plan become a reality:
“We need your strategic expertise to
help guide our development and as
many businesses as possible to put
on their list to call JFS, when they
are looking to hire, and we need
some funding to hire the proper staff
to offer the services we need for our
community. Your assistance in funding
for the future will help sustain families
in our community in this most vital
way,” Kunik concluded.
Under Kalmans’ direction, those
who turn to JFS are able to conduct
successful job searches. The program
includes orientation workshops,
networking opportunities, resume
writing, mock interviews, “how tos”
in using Linkedin and working with
recruiters. Continuing, Kalmans
stated, “We maintain a job bank with
almost 400 participants receiving
regular email about workshops, job
openings and articles. Last year, just
over 200 new clients came to us, and
we have helped 75 of these clients
secure employment. Our next step
in growing our effective program is
to hire a full-time career counselor
and administrative support,” she
reported.
Kalmans requested that business
men and women help by letting
her know when they hear of a job
opening, so that she might see if any
of the agency’s clients might be a fit
for the opening. She also suggested
their help in passing along the client’s
resume to the hiring manager, as a
help in securing an interview and
to meet with clients to assist in
networking.
Bryan Miller, of National Appraisal
Partners, spoke of the several times
he has worked with Kalmans and
hired clients from the Employment
Services and how well these clients
have been a perfect fit for his
business.
Closing the luncheon, Eric Mayer,
JFS immediate past president,
stated as more and more successes
from the JFS Employment Services
unfold, the agency will be able to
add more services to those seeking
employment. Continuing, Mayer
suggested, “Maybe you want to
help us open our resource center,
maybe you can introduce us to an
industry leader who might be willing
to collaborate with us, maybe you
would be able to provide us with job
leads or maybe would like to join us
in financially supporting JFS’ next
level of service. We need your help,
so that we can help others. Helping
someone restore their dignity and
help them regain the resources to live
a meaningful life and be able to fully
engage in our Jewish community is
the best feeling in the world.”
