Bellaire Jewish Center will be
hosting a (pre) Tu B’shevat celebra-
tion on Sunday, Jan. 29, from 1-2:30
p.m. at 5403 Braeburn Dr. Children
of all ages, parents and friends
are invited to enjoy the day’s fun
activities, including fruit arranging,
scavenger hunts, tastings of the
seven fruits of Israel, kids’ crafts,

more.
Every Sunday, the BJC opens its
doors for morning services. “Since
the summer, we have been trying
to extend Shabbat until Sunday, to
somewhat continue the intensity and
joy of Shabbos services. Men and
women at the Sunday service can
follow along, regardless of their level,
as it is a slower-paced program with
explanations and much singing,” said
Rabbi Gavriel Jacknin. “It is a great
way to prepare for the coming week
and enjoy some ‘B.L.T.’ [Bagels-Lox-
Tefillin]! ”
Additionally, every Monday night
at the home of Dr. Robert and Lennie
Weinberger in Bellaire, the BJC
delves through the Torah, studying
inspirational commentary along the
way.
Women’s classes are held on
Wednesday nights, where lessons
take place at the home of Dr.
Robert and liana Bell in Bellaire.
Learn how to make the most of your
relationships and improve character
though the wisdom of our Sages,
as we study several topics from the
“Ethics of our Fathers.”
All are welcome to stop by the
Bellaire Jewish Center.

UOS /AIPAC High School
Scholarship Program
United Orthodox Synagogues will
continue its program allowing high
school students to attend the AIPAC
National Policy Conference, which
is held each year in Washington.
Through the generosity of Deisi and
Max Blankfield, UOS is offering a
full scholarship, including airfare
and conference registration fees.
This year, the AIPAC Policy
conference will take place March
4-6. Last year, the president of
the United States and the prime
minister of Israel addressed those
in attendance. The three-day
conference is filled with programs
and speakers who educate attendees
about the importance of the U.S./
Israel relationship, explain the
nature of the relationship, and
educate conference participants on
both the method and the importance
of being involved in the political
process. The program concludes
with thousands of attendees
traveling to Capitol Hill to meet
with their members of Congress
and senators to lobby them on
the importance of the U.S./Israel
relationship. Isaac Buchine, who
received the inaugural UOS AIPAC
scholarship, described the event as
both “exciting and life changing.”
Buchine currently is a senior at
the Robert M. Beren Academy and
intends to study in Israel next year.
This year, more than 12,000
people are expected to attend the
policy conference, which will
include a special track for the more
than 1,000 high school and college
students expected.
UOS prides itself on being a
staunchly pro-Israel synagogue and
believes that this program is yet
another example of how synagogues
can promote the importance of
Zionism. □

JFS workshops provide tools for job seekers
The first Effective Job Search Work-
shop of 2012 will be presented by the
JFS Employment Services on Sunday,

free one-day seminar is designed to help
displaced professionals who are seek-
ing employment.
This all-day workshop, repeated
by popular demand, will be facilitated
by Howard Spiegel, human resources
consultant. The topics will include: The
New Job Market, Creating a Successful
Marketing Plan, Interviewing and Nego-
tiating Secrets, How to Successfully
Network to Your Next Job, and How to
Create a Winning Resume.
“There is limited seating for this
workshop, which will be the only

fore we advise you to make your
reservations as soon as possible,”
suggested Elyse Kalmans, coordina-
tor of the JFS Employment Services.
Reservations must be made by

IJW boasts full calendar for 2012
New programs and a calendar
packed with events mark the
beginning of 2012 for the Initiative
for Jewish Women. Houston women,
along with topics that pique interest
and provoke conversation, form the
heart of IJW’s program initiatives.
Topical questions will bring parti-
cipants together during the Ethical
Issues Breakfast series, led by Re-
becca Lunstroth, assistant director
of the UT Health McGovern Center
for Humanities and Ethics. Meeting
early in the morning, once a month,
at Canopy Restaurant on Montrose,
Lunstroth and Rabbi Amy Weiss
team up to address current issues,
such as “Who is Supposed to Teach
Ethics and Morality? And How?” and
“When is it Ethical to End a Life?”
The bimonthly Deborah Dialogues
feature Houston Jewish women for
dinner and a conversation. Attendees
will meet and learn from guests such
as Anna Eastman, HISD school board
member who is raising a Jewish
family without converting to Judaism;
Natalie Hausman-Weiss, wife of
Emanu El Rabbi Scott Hausman-
Weiss; Linda Burger of Jewish Family
Service; and Melissa Kean, Rice
University historian, who will discuss
the Jewish history at Rice University.
Requests from the community for
in-depth learning prompted the addi-
tion of three series of six classes, each
taught by Rabbi Amy Weiss. Topics in-
clude Judaism and Sexuality, Rabbinic
Judaism and Food, and American Jew-
ish Women. The popular Parsha and
Pastries also continues each Friday at
8:30 a.m. at Corner Bakery, where wom-
en come to examine the weekly Torah
portion and relate it to their own lives.
Programs to move the spirit are
happening every other month on the
first day of the Hebrew month. Rosh
Chodesh is a traditionally “woman’s
celebration,” and IJW is reaching out
to women who are eager to explore
their spiritual side.
March is especially exciting for
IJW as the “Tournament of Friendly
Words” takes place on Sunday,
March 25. Registered players will
compete for prizes and bragging
rights as they shed their phones and
iPads to play Scrabble, face to face.
The event serves as a fundraiser for
IJW.
In order to fund the events and
programs fully, IJW has implemented
a membership program. To join, visit
ijwtexas.org, or for information,
contact Rabbi Weiss at rabbiweiss@
ijwtexas.org. □
