Oasis in the flood
When you woke up on the morning
of Jan. 9, you may have said to your-
self, “What drought?” Well, I had a doc-

the rain was little more than a drizzle.
By the time I arrived at my location at
Holcombe Boulevard., we had a good-
sized rain. We needed it, I rationalized
and decided to valet-park, to have easy
(and dry) access to my car.
Nothing to it, until a couple of
hours later, when I picked up my car. It
was a deluge! At the valet station, cars
coming in (now, everyone wanted to
valet) were backed up by cars leaving.
It took about a half-hour to get my car.
So, I headed home for a routine
15-minute trip. Was I wrong! The big
decision was, “Do I take Holcombe to
the West Loop or get onto Braeswood?”
I took Braeswood. What a mistake! At
least, that’s what I thought then, but
later that night, according to news
reports, either way was probably trou-
ble.
As I passed Stella Link, there was
a large lake of rainwater just east of
Three Brothers Bakery. No problem;
I had cars in front of me and saw it
wasn’t that deep. Then, farther down
by the railroad tracks, I saw lots of red
lights of cars stopped and some trying
to backup. The water at this lake was
covering most of the tires of the cars
that tried to get through. No one did,
and one car was stuck in the middle. It
now was pouring like the dickens, and
I couldn’t go forward and, with cars
behind me, I couldn’t go back. Water
was rising around me, so I decided to
cross over the median, heard a loud
crunch and got caught up on the con-
crete gutters.
After gunning the engine in for-
ward and then in reverse, I went
nowhere. I thought I was permanently
stuck and would need a tow truck, at
least, before my car floated away. Just
then, a lovely couple, probably in their
30s, came to my rescue and lifted and
pushed me clear. It now was raining so
heavily that I couldn’t properly thank
them. They were soaked, and I was
soaked, but I won’t forget them. Not
knowing whether there was damage
to my car, I headed back toward Stella
Link. The previously mentioned lake
was now over the tires, and no car was
able to get through.
In the midst of the storm and my
dilemma, I found a lighthouse in the
storm, Three Brothers Bakery. I pulled
up to its raised parking area, noticing
two SUVs. They belonged to two young
mothers, who failed at their attempt
to pick up their kids at Beth Yeshurun
and UOS day schools.
The wonderful lady behind the
counter offered us free coffee. I gladly
took her up on the offer and purchased
an incredible Cheese Danish. I think,
under the circumstances, it was the
best one I ever tasted. Despite the
weather, I now was high and dry in
Houston’s premier bakery with lots of
food and clean restrooms. Things were
looking up!
Hours passed by, and, for lunch,
I had a great Everything Bagel with
Vegetable Cream Cheese. I never knew
that Three Brothers sold those little
1-ounce containers that go so perfectly
with their bagels.
In the midst of all this, my cell
phone rang, and it was my daughter,
Amy. She was called to pick up her
husband Jason, whose car was under
water, and he was stranded just a few
blocks from where I was. (His car
made the evening news.) But, she now
was stuck on the 610 Loop feeder road.
Thank goodness for cell phones, so
we could check up on all the family.
Eventually, Jason’s car was towed, and
he rode with it to the dealer, where he
picked up a rental car. Amy made it
home at about the same time as I did,
six hours after I left the doctor’s office.
The moral of this story is that if
we ever have another drought-ending
rainstorm again and the streets get
flooded, and you get stranded, do it on
Braeswood near the Three Brothers
Bakery.
