Federation
The Houston Jewish community
is preparing to pump up the volume
for the 18th annual Yom Limmud
with two class-act concerts. Yom
Limmud 2012, scheduled for Feb. 19
at Congregation Beth Yeshurun, is
the annual day of learning hosted
by the Jewish Federation of Greater
Houston.
Rachel Buchman will liven up
the morning with a rousing and
interactive concert for families with
young children. The Josh Nelson
Project will wrap up the day, with
its infectious spirit and funky
contemporary sound.
PJ Library Story Time, a monthly
program for preschoolers and their
families, will take place at 10:30 a.m.
at Yom Limmud. Featuring a story,
crafts and snacks, PJ Library Story
Time is a fun-filled hour for young
children and a great way for families
to meet each other. Immediately
following, Buchman will engage
families in song and dance with
“Rockin’ Rhymes and Snappy Songs!”
For more than 25 years, Buchman
has lived, performed and taught
young people, from toddlers to
doctoral students, in New York,
Boston, Houston, Washington state,
Washington D.C., Israel, England
and Germany. She has presented
teacher workshops nationwide
for the National Association for
the Education of Young Children,
Houston Grand Opera, Project
Graduation, Young Audiences, the
Children’s Museum of Houston, the
Bureau of Jewish Education and many
other organizations.
She collaborated with
neurologist Dr. Ron
Tintner on researching
musical intuitiveness in
young children, as well
as the positive effects
that making music and
moving to music have on
the brain.
Buchman incorpor-
ates music from all
over the world in her
programs, teaching
songs and dances in
their original languages
with translations. She
stresses participation
- not simply by
encouraging singing
or clapping - but by
engaging the minds,
imaginations and bodies
of children. Buchman’s
unique approach helps to
instill an appreciation of
international music at an
early age.
The artist’s experience in music
and theater has greatly influenced
her performance and educative
technique: entertaining children while
challenging them in new ways. She
studied voice and piano, as well as
music history and theory. Buchman
integrates instruments in her program
to show children how music works
scientifically and how our bodies
produce musical sounds. Her earlier
career in professional theater enables
her to combine improvisation, comedy
and movement to create
a performance-art
experience of songs and
music. Buchman shows
children that music is
something they can
create and appreciate,
and that through music
they can express
themselves. In contrast
to the current trend
from children’s music
toward music video and
computerization, she
brings music back to the
voices and imaginations
of children. Buchman
currently is a lecturer
in music and head of
the young children’s
division of The Shepherd
School of Music at Rice
University.
At the conclusion
of nearly 75 learning
sessions, Yom Limmud
will present The Josh
Nelson Project. Josh
Nelson is one of the most popular
performers and producers in modern
Jewish music. A multi-instrumentalist
and songwriter, Nelson’s music is
celebrated and integrated into the
repertoire of congregations, camps
and communities around the world.
Delivering high-octane Jewish rock,
the Josh Nelson Project consists of
five of the most talented performers
in the United States. Each musician is
a young, Jewish, positive role model.
Nelson has performed more
than 1,000 shows in a variety
of venues. Highlights include:
international conventions for each
of the major youth movements in
the USA, (NFTY, USY, BBYO, etc.),
URJ biennial conventions, JCCA
national conventions, JCC Maccabi
Games, CAJE conferences and JCCs
across the country. He serves as the
music director for the URJ Biennial
Convention, faculty for the Hava
Nashira Music Institute, and he is a
musical artist in residence for the JCC
Maccabi Artsfest. Currently, Nelson
is part of the music and lyrics team
penning the score for the Broadway
production of “Sleepless in Seattle.”
The year 2009 marked the long-
awaited release of “Lift,” the Josh
Nelson Project’s debut CD. Built
upon songs of Jewish identity and
continuity, “Lift” breaks new ground
with razor-sharp lyricism and a
progressive, radio-ready sound.
Yom Limmud offers an entire
day’s worth of Jewish learning
opportunities; plus, both concerts
are free and open to the community.
Buchman will perform at 11:15 a.m.
and the Josh Nelson Project will take
the stage at 3:15 p.m.
The entire community is invited to
attend. Registration begins at 8 a.m.,
and classes will take place throughout
the day.
