TORAH DAY SCHOOL
The school’s basketball team is in its fourth season. Under the coaching of
Sean Wolfson and Patrick Weber, the Titans are having a great winning season.
Being on the basketball team is an opportunity that allows the boys to utilize
their athletic abilities, while enhancing their sense of responsibility and self-
discipline. They work hard to make every practice, come early to games and
assist in fundraising for the end-of-season banquet. Sean Wolfson and Patrick
Weber (coaches) and team members David Bargraser, Yehuda Tanenbaum,
Yoeli Donin, Sammy Mandl, Eli Moshe Barnett, Menachem Fishman, Mendy
Donin, Elan Leonard, Lior Matsree and Isaac Dobin.
Siddur Time presented at Sephardic Gan
On Sunday, Jan. 15,
eight boys and eight girls at
Sephardic Gan presented
their first-grade siddur play.
Principal Rabbi Yerachmiel
Garfield’s welcoming remarks
opened the morning as he
introduced morah Fraydee
Wender. She stated fondly, “It
is so nice to teach children
that love to learn.”
The 16 youngsters were
handed their new siddurim
and davened, starting with Mode Ani.
The highlight of the presentation was a series of three plays, put on by
the students, who acted out the importance of tefilot in Jewish life. As they
talked about kavanah (intention and concentration in prayer), it was obvious
that they knew its meaning.
Morah Fraydee concluded the event, crediting Rabbi Eliezer Kessler with
creating a child-friendly siddur, and there was candy to help make everyone’s
davening sweeter.
The entire morning was broadcast live, so that all who could not attend
were able to delight in the importance of the occasion. □

Chicago rabbi connects with Hillel students
Houston Hillel welcomed Rabbi Niles
Goldstein to Rice University on Jan. 12.
Rabbi Goldstein’s informal, late-night
session at Willy’s Pub attracted students
living on campus, who welcomed an
opportunity to learn from the rabbi.
Rabbi Goldstein is the award-
winning author or editor of nine books.
He served as the founding rabbi and
spiritual leader of The New Shul in New
York’s Greenwich Village for more than
a decade (1999-2009), and now, he is its
rabbi emeritus. Rabbi Goldstein, now
in Chicago, has been featured in many
publications and has appeared on radio
and television.
Rabbi Kenny Weiss, Houston Hillel’s
executive director, said, “Houston
Hillel’s students are fortunate that
Rabbi Goldstein was able to carve out
some time from his busy schedule as
Congregation Emanu El’s scholar in
residence. I appreciate the opportunity
