JUST A LITTLE MORE TO THE LEFT! Kathy
Holmes, Nancy DeWees and Thais Gordon signs in
the cafeteria for the Westerners Ways Daze Dance
tomorrow night. Music will be provided by “the 5th
Soul” from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. (in the LHS cafe-
teria. Sophomores with howdy tags will be admitted
free. Juniors and seniors will be charged 25 cefits
admission. The dance climaxes traditional Howdy
Week and sophomore orientation. Kathy Crozier,-
chairman of the dance remarked, “We chose a political
theme because it is current and up-to-date. We are
expecting a good dance this year and we hope that

Committeemen Work Behind Scenes
Working behind the scenes at Lub-
bock High, 11 committees labor to
bring spirit and enthusiasm to stu-
dents, projects and activities at LHS.
The honor committee, headed by
Thais Gordon, works to promote the
Honor Code and honesty among
Westerners. Honor Week, climaxed
by the honor assembly is also a part
of the committee.
Kathy Lack, head cheerleader, is
the chairman of the courtesy com-
mittee. Purpose is to promote cour-
tesy throughout the year, especially
during Courtesy Week and the cour-
tesy assembly.:
Sue Ratliff, student body secretary,
heads the assembly committee. Sue
is responsible for all paid assemblies
and the all-school assembly.
Recreation committee, headed by
Kathy Crozier, student body treasur-
er, produces Westerner Ways Daze
Dance, Christmas dance and Round-
up.
After each major event at LHS, the
evaluation committee judges the pro-
grams and gives a rating. Jim Farley
heads this committee.
Leading all fire and disaster drills
is Pat Kelly, student body vice-presi-
dent in charge of the safety commit-
tee.
Advertising upcoming events and
promoting enthusiasm and participa-
tion among student is the task of the
publicity committee, led by Nancy
DeWees.
Providing the WHO’S WHO, Wes-
terner Ways Handbook and Round-
up programs is Tommy Bartley, head
of publications committee.
The newsletter committee, headed
by Angela Taylor, puts up the month-
ly calendar on the bulletin board
across from the Student Council of-
fice and also publishes the weekly
newsletter.
Orientation committee, headed by
Albert Hendenson, helps new stu-
dents feel welcome at Lubbock High.
Plant and decoration committee,
the only sophomore committee, is re-
sponsible for cleaning the trophy
case, the plaque in front of the school
and decorating the school for Christ-
Orientation Scheduled
To Acquaint Sophomores
Lubbock High s annual Sophomore
Orentation will be Saturday from 9:30
a.m. until 12:30 p.m. This event is
designed to help sophomores and new
students get acquainted with Lubbock
High activities.
Mike Bryant, president of Lubbock
High for 1967-68, will be the guest
speaker. This year’s president, Ar-
thur Fletcher, will preside.
Officers for the incoming year will
-be introduced. Committees will be
introduced and committee heads will
discuss the functions of each com-
mittee.
The students will then be divided,
and several will go with each com-
mittee head for discussions of the
year’s various activities.

Songs by the students and skits by
representatives of each committee will
provide entertainment for the event.
Lunch will be served at 11:30.
This year the lunch will be catered
by Tom and Bingo s for 65 cents per
person. If students prefer, they may
bring their own sack lunch.
One of the chairmen for the event,
Sue Ratliff, had this to say about the
event, Everyone is excited about the
incoming sophomores. We know they
will want to come to the orientation
to learn a little bit and have a lot
of fun.”
Sue went on to add, “This is the
best way to find out where you fit
into Lubbock High. Everyone who
comes will be glad he ddd.”
Parking Regulations Set
To Remedy Situation
Parking of cars should present no
big problem this year if there is daily
compliance with regulations, accord-
ing to Safety Committee Chairman
Pat Kelly.
Students and teachers may park
north of the Calvary Baptist Church
which is east of the school building.
They must not park on the city li-
brary parking area, Furr’s parking
lot, Calvary Baptist Church park-
ing lot, or on vacant lots near the
school building.
Parking lot north of the building
and the lot east of the Calvary Baptist
Church will be available for parking
by rental only. Each parking space
will be rented at the rate of $15. per
year, $8 per semester, or $2 per
month. The spaces are numbered, and
only those renting space are to use
them between 7:30' a.m. and 5 p.m.
Cars parked in prohibited areas will
be impounded without prior notifi-
cation. The owner will have to pick
up his car and pay the towing fee.
All students should park in a man-
ner as prescribed by the safety com-
mittee of the Student Council.
Political Convention Themes
For Westerner Ways Dance
The long arm of politics has even
reached the social functions of the
school.
Howdy Week convention opens this
week at Lubbock High School.
Traditional Howdy Week customs
such as howdy tags will again be
used this year. The tags, white for
sophomores and gold for upperclass-
men are worn during the “get ac-
quainted’’ week.
AH LHS delegates will meet to-
morrow at 7:30 p.m. for a sign-paint-
ing party in the boy’s gym.
The week’s events continue with
the Sophomore Orientation Saturday,
beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Climaxing the week’s events, the
Westerner Ways Daze Dance con-
venes from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
in the LHS cafeteria.
Sophomores are admitted free with
their howdy tags. Admission for jun-
iors and seniors is 25 cents.
Music by the 5th Soul” provides
the beat for LHS delegates.

Council Gets New Head
Veteran faculty member at Lub-
bock High for two years, Coach Bill
Carter, has been appointed the new
Student Activity Director.
After receiving his Masters Degree
in Physical Education and School Ad-
ministration in 1965 from East Texas
State University in Commerce, Mr.
Carter came to Lubbock High to
teach health and serve as athletic
trainer.
During his high school years at
Woodrow Wilson High School in
Dallas, Mr. Carter lettered in football
in 1957-58 and in track in 1957.
In preparation for assuming his
new position, the former teacher at-
tended two summer workshops and
counciled with student officers dur-
ing the summer. A week-long Re-
gional XVII Media Workshop that
dealt with design and construction
was attended, and the Trinity Student
Council Workshop in San Antonio
helped the new director and student
council officers learn how to cope
with council and school problems.
Mr. Carter was accompanied to the
Trinity workshop by student council
officers. “We had a ball! It was hard
work, but all of us who attended it
thought it was a blast!” said Mr. Car-
ter.
Among his many responsibilities are
student council sponsor, class coun-
cils sponsor, student activity calendar,
clubs — organization and calendar,
assemblies and coordinate selection
of student honors outside of groups
and audio vision director.
In anticipation of this coming year,
Coach Carter remarked, “I person-
ally think that with the enthusiasm
shown for the past five weeks by the
guys and gals that have been up
here, that this is going to be a ter-
rific year.”
Coach Bill Carter succeeds Coach
Max O’Banion, Assistant Principal of
Coronado High School.
NOW ALL WE NEED IS COOPERATION. Mr. M carter, newly
assigned student council director, reviews a section of workshop material
he and^ student officers brought back from the Trinity workshop with
Sid Rios. Mr. Carter, foimer health teacher and athletic trainer, will also
be m charge of the audio-visual department this year.
