Summer Workouts Prepare Westerners For Great Action
ONCE AGAIN the reins of the
top coaching position at LHS rested
in different hands, the hands of
Head Coach Tommy Stone.
This year the husky, well built
mentor from Abilene, has used his
skills since early August to train the
‘68 Westerner grid team.
THE WESTERNERS began pad
training August 30 after weeks of
conditioning.

will effect the Westerners, the return
of 11 lettermen will prove an out-
standing asset. Randy Williams,
Pat Kelly, Jack Butler, Don Taylor,
Joey Chapman, Tom Whiteside,
Kenny Stacy, Roger Baker, Sammy
Davis, Jimmy Easter anr Ed Harrell
compose the veteran Westerners.
POSSIBLE WESTERNER stand-
outs are Brad Youngblood, Eddie
Perez, Terry Gilbert, along with
Art Fletcher and Pat Kelly.
El Paso games will no -longer be
played. In their place Odessa Ector
and Big Spring will be added to the
list to replace the Yselta and Burges
clashes.
AMARILLO TASCOSA, rated first
in the state, will probably be the
toughest opponent for the LHS squad
this year. Tascosa is a district
game for the Westerners in the 3-
AAAA action.
Thus far the Lubbock gridsmen
have been very fortunate, unplagued
by injuries.
“THE PLAYER’S ATTITUDE and
participation overshadows what we
lack in ability,” commented the
Westerner boss.
Next week’s clash against the us-
ually tough Midland Lee Rebels is
a sure test for the Westerners. The
Rebels run a pro type offense with
an overdose of the passing attack.
Midland overshadowed the Lubbock
group last year.
CONCERNING THE Midland
game Coach Stone said, “We feel
like every student should go to the
Midland game to help our boys as
much as possible.”
Roger Baker, a starter in both
offense and defense, is back with
the Westerners. Last season Roger
missed a great amount of the action
due to an injury.
TOMORROW AFTERNOON
Coach Stone’s troops clash in a
scrimmage against Levelland. The
scrimmage game should giv^ the
Westerners more experience for the
Midland bout.
Midland has downed the Lubbock
gridsmen in the last two encounters.
In ‘66 the Rebels slipped past the
Westerners 14-0. Later, in the ‘67
season, Midland once again held
LHS to a scoreless loss.
