Westerner Football Season
Begins Year With New Look
__:__ALBERT ARRIOLA-
THE 1968 FOOTBALL SEASON will be getting underway next week
with most of the teams seeing aetion with non-distriet opponents. Lubbock
High will begin its season with a game against the Midland Lee Rebels
next week. '/

With Tommy Stone, head defensive man and first
assistant for almost state champion Abilene Cooper
last year, at the helm plus an entirely new offense,
defense and uniforms not to mention attitude, the
Westerners are ready to erase last year’s 1-8-1 mark
and their two year production of 4-14-2 from the
minds of Lubbock High supporters.
ONLY ABOUT two starters from last year’s squad
are back, but the Westerners could start nine seniors
on offense and eight on defense.
Coach Stone will be entering his tenth year as
head coach. In nine previous tries (at Iola, Garwood and Roscoe) he has
compiled a 6925-1 record which includes three district titles.
STILL AS 4A teams go, Lubbock High will be small this year again.
Whiteside, at 204, and Chapman, at 200, are the squad’s biggest men.
The Westerners will operate from a Slot I (similiar to what Texas
Tech runs), always using a split end and slot back. On defense, LHS will
esort to an Arkansas Monster.
ONE THING that- can be certain about the Westerners is that they will
>e a team that should be an exciting one to watch. With so many new
caches this year, we will certainly be looking forward to see what the
utcome will be at the end of the season.

I know that you will probably be tired of hearing this, but one way
lat we can help our teams is by attending as many of the games as
ossible. Support has proven to be a great help to a football team.

HOPE THAT you all had a very enjoyable summer and enjoyed the
arious summer sports activities. Talking to some of my friends I have
ersonally found out that golf is becoming a very interesting sport.
If course it will never take the place of football.

Let’s all get ready and enjoy a new season of football which will
robably prove to be an exciting one this year. Starting next week we
'ill be featuring a Player-of-the Week story.
