Mr. and Mrs. Forrest McDowell,
of Amarillo, are the parents of a
baby boy weighing 6 pounds, 8
ounces. Mrs. McDowell is the for-
mer Ruth Smith, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Ralph Smith.
Dedication Sunday — Garretson Senior Citizens Center
Friends Are Urged
To Attend Opening
Of Senior Center
All friends of the senior citizens
of Carson County, Texas are urged
to attend the dedication ceremonies
for the Garretson Senior Citizens
Center on the west edge of Panhan-
dle all day Sunday, June 7.
Mr. R. J. LeTorneau, philanthro-
pist, lay preacher and manufactur-
er of Longview, Texas will be the
guest speaker. At eleven o’clock in
the morning he will preach at the
First Baptist Church of Panhandle
at a combined service of the Bap-
tist, Christian and Methodist Chur-
ches. The adult choirs of the three
churches will furnish the message
in music. This new church building
will comfortably seat over 700 per-
sons so there will ample room for
all.
At 3:00 p.m., on the well shaded
lawn of the Carson County Court-
house, President Howard Lane of
the Center will open the afternoon
service. Judge Clarence C. Williams
will present the speaker, Mr. Le-
Tourneau. A well rounded program
will be provided.
The Garretson Senior Citizens Cen-
ter is but a few blocks west of the
courthouse. Those assembled will
move from the courthouse to the
center upon conclusion of the court-
house lawn meeting where light re-
freshments will be served and a guid-
ed tour through the center will take
place. Manager Maurice Garner,
trustees and others will be present
to answer all questions having to do
with this beautiful custodial home.
All residents of the Texas and the
Oklahoma Panhandles have heard
®f the Garretson Center provided
hy generous citizens of the area and
will be most welcomed during this
entire day of dedication.
Open Discussion
is On Tap For
WDDC Breakfast
The monthly breakfast of the
White Deer Development Commis-
sion will be held Saturday, June 6,
at 6:30 a.m. in the Educational
Building of the First Baptist Church.
The ladies of the church will serve
the breakfast.
All committee reports will be giv-
en during the business meeting.
There will also be an open discus-
sion on all subjects relative to the
progress and improvement of our
city.
Mr. Marvin Urbanczyk is to be a
guest and will speak on the opera-
tion of the Havajava Manufacturing
Company.
DeWayne Brown, new resident
pharmacist, will also be a guest.
All citizens interested in the pro-
gress and improvement of White
Deer are urged to attend.
Democrats Slate
Run-Off Election
Saturday, June 6
The second Democratic Primary
run-off election will be held Satur-
day, June 6, at the high school. Vot-
ing will begin at 8 a.m. and con-
tinue until 7 p.m., according to Pre-
cinct Chairman W. J. Stubblefield.
The election is statewide to select
a Democrat nominee for Congress-
man-at-large. The race is between
the incumbent, Rep. Joe Pool of
Dallas, and former State Senator
Robert Baker of Houston.
Frank C. Erwin, Jr., chairman of
the State Democratic Executive
Committee, today released the fol-
lowing information regarding the
State Democratic Convention which
will be held in Houston on June 16.

Miss Kim Morris
Is Tech Graduate
Miss Karen Edith (Kim) Morris
graduated with honors from Texas
Technological College on Saturday,
May 30. Miss Morris was a Home
Economics Education major and
received her Bachelor of Science
degree.
Miss Morris was recently initiated
into Phi Kappa Phi on the basis of
her accumulative junior grades. To
j'eceive this honor, a student must
,ave a grade point average among
e top 2 percent of the junior stu-
ents in the entire college.
WHITE DEER GETS RAIN
Since the early hours of Wednes-
day morning last week, some four
showers brought a total of about
one and a half inches of much
needed moisture to the area over
a five-day period. Cloudy skies dur-
ing the week have given hope for
more of the same. Mild to chilly
temperatures, ranging from the
lower 50’s at night to the lower 70’s
during the day, have prevailed this
week.
Second Semester
Honor Roll Named
By High School
In order for a student to make a
semester honor roll he must be in
the top 10 per cent of his class. The
following students have achieved
such a record. The names of stu-
dents in each class are arranged
in alphabetical order.
Senior Class:
Linda Crowson, Beverly Heaton,
Wes Schultz, Richard Ulrich.
Junior Class:
Cheryl Anderson, Linda Bentley,
Marie Gallegly, Louise Hammon,
Paulette Hinton.
Sophomore Class:
Patricia Beighle, Tommy Dittber-
ner, Ruth Geisler, Beverly Harlan,
Myrna Shubring, Nancy Ulrich.
Freshman Class:
LaQueta Keahey, Frank Kelly,
Kay Schultz, Lena Sisco, Gary
Stewart.
Mr. Lawson Shaw, principal, re-
ports that there were fewer failures
and higher grade averages this year
than any year in the past 12. Also,
there were fewer dropouts. The
dropouts by class were as follows:
Freshman boys 1, Freshman girls
1, Sophomore boys 0, Sophomore
girls 0, Junior boys 2, junior girls
1, Senior boys 1, Senior girls 1.
This is a dropout percentage of
3 1/3 per cent of students who en-
rolled August 29, 1963. Marriage
caused three of the above students
to drop out. Necessity to work in
order to supplement the family
budget caused one to drop out.
Myrna Haiduk Is
Graduated From
Nursing School
Miss Myrna Haiduk graduated
from St. Anthony’s School of Nur-
sing , Amarillo, at Commencement
Exercises on Friday evening, May
29, in the School of Nursing Auditor-
ium. The School of Nursing is oper-
ated by The Sisters of Charity of
the Incarnate Word. Sister M. Per-
petua, R. N.; M. S. is Director.
The 12 members of the graduating
class were presented their diplomas
by the Most Rev. Lawrence M. De
Falco, J.C.L.; D.D., Bishop of Amar-
illo.
Miss Haiduk, the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Fred Haiduk was a 1961
graduate of Pampa High School.
She was a member of Las Cresas
Social Club which she served as
vice-president during her Senior
year.
A member of Sacred Heart Church,
White Deer, she was active in local
and district Catholic Youth Organ-
izations. She was elected Queen of
the local organization in 1960. She
served the district as vice-president.
While a student at St. Anthony’s
she was Regional reporter of the
Future Nurse’s Association.
She will remain in Amarillo where
she will be a member of St. An-
thony’s Hospital Staff.
Three Churches
Are Affected By
Recent Changes
The announcement of the recent
ministerial changes in three of the
local churches has been made this
week.
Rev. Curtis Lee, pastor of the
First Methodist Church for the past
four years, has been appointed by
the Amarillo District of the Mel-
odist Conference as pastor of the
Buchanan Street Methodist Chur^ii
of Amarillo. Rev. Lee will assume
the duties of the new pastorate on
June 7.
Rev. Ralph Aday, pastor of the
First Baptist Church for the past
three years, resigned Sunday, May
31, to accept the pastorate of First
Baptist Church in Granby, Mo. Rev.
Aday will be in the local church
through June 21. Selection of a new
pastor to replace Rev. Aday will
be announced in the near future.
Don E. Mullinik, minister of the
Assembly of God Church, has ac-
cepted a new pastorate in Little-
field, Texas. He and his family
moved from White Deer on Tuesday.
WATER PRESSURE WELL BE
BACK TO NORMAL VERY SOON
City water patrons will be glad to
know that city water pressure will
be back to normal very soon.
Sand blasting and patching of the
water tower were finished Tuesday
and painting should begin after
Wednesday. Recent rains have re-
sulted in the delay in the comple-
tion of this repair work.
Traffic Ordinance
Will Be Offered
Corporation Court Recorder, Jo
Milliken, has been meeting with the
attorney for the city recently to
discuss and review all of the local
ordinances.
A new traffic ordinance for White
Deer is being drafted by the attor-
ney for the city and will be pre-
sented to the City Council at their
meeting Friday, June 5.
After approval by the Council, the
ordinance will be published for all
citizens to read and heed.
Rev. Butler Will
Lead Methodists
Rev. Oland Butler, pastor of the
Methodist Church in Stinnett for the
past four years, has been appoint-
ed the new pastor of the White Deer
Methodist Church to replace Rev.
I Curtis Lee, who was appointed te
j the pastorate of an Amarillo church.
Rev. and Mrs. Butler will move
into the parsonage this weekend,,
and will assume the new pastorate
on Sunday, June 7.
Juanna Jo Moore
Will Study Soon
In Hawaii School
Juanna Jo Moore, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Virgil Moore, will be go-
ing to Hawaii soon on the STOP
Study Tour.
Miss Moore, Joan Greene, Spear-
man, and Sandra Stargel, Memphis,
all students at Texas Tech, will fly
by Pan Am jet from Los Angeles
on June 28 and arrive in Hawaii
four hours later.
The girls will stay at the White
Sands Hotel in Waikiki during their
stay. They will attend classes at the
University of Hawaii during the
morning and make planned tours
of the islands during the afternoon
hours. Offered as part of the tour
are free surf board and water ski
lessons, as well as flower arrange-
ments.
The STOP Tour will arrive back
in Los Angeles on Aug. 7.
June 5 Deadline
To Get Tickets To
Alumni Banquet
White Deer High School alumni
must purchase their tickets for the
Leap Year Banquet prior to 6:90
p.m. Friday, June 5. The banquet
will be held at the Robert E. Lee
Junior High School cafeteria in
Pampa Saturday, June 6, at 8:00.
The customary visitation period
will start at 7:00.
The secretary reports that a large
number have written from out of
town — so everything points to a
good turnout this year.
The Publicity Committee feels
certain that some of the grads did
not receive an invitation due to
lack of proper addresses; but, any-
one who graduated from W.D.H.S.
is invited and may bring one guest.
The Place Card Committee would
appreciate an early ticket purchase
so their work may be completed by
banquet time.

Mrs. Jacque Barnes accepted a
position with The News this week
to fill the vacancy of Mrs. Lela
Wheeler, who resigned to be with
her children this summer.
