Seminole Becomes The Cross Roads Of The Oil
Fields By Accident. II Helped Seminole When
Things Went Wrong
AN INTERESTING FACT ABOUT SEMINOLE AS TOLD BY AN OLD TIMER
TO THE SEMINOLE REAL ESTATE COMPANY
In the early 1930s the business people of Seminole
were moving heaven and earth to get a paved road built
to the new oil field town of Hobbs, New Mexico. Hobbs
was helping. Most of the banking business from that
area had always come to Seminole and the oil people of
the new town of Hobbs banked in Seminole just as the
ranchers had before them.
But the state highway commissioner who lived at
Abilene and controlled the building of State roads in
this section, ordered that a new road be completed that
would connect this area with the Bankhead highway at
Odessa and so feed that travel artery. The north to south
highway was built across Gaines county. Seminole didn't
even care much about this road at the time but it worked
out for the best after all.
In just a few months it became evident to all con-
cerned that a paved road to Hobbs from Seminole was a
business necessity for Texas and so the road was built
across Gaines county from east to west.
SO, when Seminole got the wrong road it proved a
blessing for they got the right road almost at the same
time and thus;
SEMINOLE BECAME THE CROSS ROADS OF THE
OIL FIELDS OF WEST TEXAS AND EASTERN NEW
MEXICO. ‘H
