Sahara sunset?
Courtesy photo by Bill Newsom
Port Aransan Bill Newsom was at the beach recently when he saw this spectacular sunset over Mustang
Island. Newsom says he believes the colors are “due to the Sahara Desert sand in the sky being
bombarded by the rays of the setting sun.”
Champagne cruise tickets going fast
Once again, this year’s cruise is mer owner of Fisherman’s Wharf and
dedicated to the memory of Barbara long-time member of the Port Aransas
Sheppard, one of its founders, a for- Rotary Club.
Aug. 12 Russell Edge performance will be recorded-
Free Sunset Sounds concert to be on CD
Music and outdoor lovers are in-
vited to pack a picnic and head for the
Patsy Jones Amphitheater at Roberts
Point Park tomorrow evening, Friday,
Aug. 12.
Sunset Sounds, a free concert, will
feature the music of Russell Edge.
The event gets under way at 7 p.m.
and will be recorded on a CD.
Edge, a native of South Georgia
who moved to Texas in 1975, de-
scribes his music as “nostalgia”. His
style is a little bit country, a little bit
rock-n-roll.
He says 90 percent of the songs
he plays are because someone has
told him the song suits him. As
a result, the CD recorded during
Sunset Sounds will be comprised of
requested songs.
Rachael King, assistant director of
the Parks and Recreation Department,
which sponsors the concerts, said,
“Bring your list of song requests, your
cooler with snacks and beverages, a
chair or blanket to sit on, and join
us for an evening of entertainment
overlooking the ship channel.”
Sunset Sounds is held on the sec-
ond Friday of the month from April
through October. For more informa-
tion on this or any other Parks and
Recreation event, call 749-4158.
Tickets for the annual Champagne
Cruise and Mini Taste of Port Aransas
are half-way to being sold out.
Only 150 will be sold, and on the
second day of sales, nearly half of
them were sold, according to Linda
Zahn, president of the sponoring Port
Aransas Rotary Club.
The event will be held Friday,
Sept. 9.
Tickets may be purchased at the Port
Aransas Chamber of Commerce-Tour-
ist Bureau, 421W. Cotter; the Family
Center IGA customer service window,
418 S. Alister; and ValueBank Texas,
500 S. Alister. Tickets are $30 per
person, which is tax deductible.
Ticket holders will gather at Fish-
erman’s Wharf to board the Scat Cat
prior to the 7:30 p.m. departure for
an evening of dining, dancing and
cruising-as the sun sets and the moon
rises. Samples of island cuisine will
be provided by virtually all of the
restaurants in Port Aransas, and re-
freshments, including champagne and
beer, will be served.
Dancing under the stars will be to
music provided by the duet of Eddie
Olivarez, Jr. on the saxophone and
Vince Ginova on keyboard.
The event is unique in that 100
percent of all services, food and drink
are donated by the community and 100
percent of all proceeds are returned
to the community by the Rotary
Club. Profits from the cruise benefit
projects directed toward the youth of
Port Aransas.
