Conelrad Gets
Anpther Job
WASHINGTON US - Conelrad,
the radio and television signal de-
signed to broadcast warning of
an enemy attack, ii getting a new
Job—alerting listeners for emer-
gency storm and flood -warnings.
Announcing this yesterday, the
U.S. Weaher Bureau said the Con-
elrad attention signal will be em-
ployed, however, "only in the moat
serious emergencies."
As examples, the bureau listed
a hurricane’s suddenly changing
course, a tornado approaching a
city or a flash flood building up
from torrential rains and Sweep-
ing down a river valley.
After the warning signal has
been sounded, the weather bulle-
tins will be broadcast on the sta-
tion’s regular frequency, rather
than on special Conelrad frequen-
cies.
The bureau said it will take sev-
eral months to complete arrange-
ments with radio and television
stations but that it experts the
new storm warning system to be
in effect in most areas in time
