‘Stangs lose to
Seminole in OT

SEMINOLE - Unlike
a number of West Texas
teams Friday, Sweetwater
and Seminole not only got
to play their game but pro-
vided some extra excite-
ment by going to overtime.
And unlike in their sea-
son opener, the Mustangs
got on the scoreboard and
did it early, needing a mere
four plays on their open-
ing possession to take a 7-0
lead over the host Indians.
But after that promising
start, the first-week prob-
lems — turnovers and offen-
sive inconsistency — began
to resurface.

After producing 172 yards
and 14 points in the first
half, Sweetwater had just 87
yards and no points in the
second half and overtime as
Seminole eventually came
back for a 20-14 win.
It was another tough
defeat for the Mustangs,
who fell to Burkburnett
14-0 in their opener and
failed again to give new
head coach Craig Slaughter
his first victory. Seminole,
meanwhile, is 2-0 after win-
ning its first two games by a
total of just seven points.
Sweetwater led 14-7 after
the first quarter, a lead it
maintained at halftime, but
the game began to shift in
Seminole's favor when the
Roscoe
delayed;
Hornets
cancel
Two Nolan County teams
had their games affected by
the dangerous lightning and
heavy rain that hit Friday.
Roscoe called off its game
at Hawley and rescheduled
it for noon Saturday, accor-
ding to Roscoe coach Wes
Williams. Both teams were
looking for their first wins
of the season.
Highland went one step
further. The Hornets not
only cancelled their home
opener against Ira after
waiting for several hours for
the bad weather to subside,
hut the teams agreed not to
reschedule it.
Both teams came into the
game with 1-0 records and
played a thriller last year in
Ira, with Highland winning
36-80 by scoring on the last
play ot the game.
Indians took the second half
kickoff and used a 14-play
drive to tie the game.
The Indians' scoring drive
covered 70 yards and used
up the first 7:10 of the third
quarter. It ended with a
4-yard run by Chago Gomez
and extra point kick that left
the teams tied at 14 for the
remainder of regulation.
Sweetwater's best scoring
chance of the second half
came on its next posses-
sion, hut it ended with a
fumble that Seminole recov-
ered at its 37. The Indians
then immediately got into
range as Gomez broke off a
55-yard run to Sweetwater’s
8-yard line. Two more runs
got Seminole to the 1.
But the Mustangs respon-
ded with their best defen-
sive stand of the game by
stopping consecutive runs
for no gain and taking over
just outside their goal line
to begin the fourth quarter.
With the offense strug-
gling, Sweetwater’s defense
kept the game tied 14-14
at the end of regulation by
stopping two more drives.
The first ended in a missed
46-vard field goal, and the
other was mostly due to
consecutive 15-yard penal-
ties on the Mustangs that
got Seminole to midfield.
After Sweetwater failed
to score at the start of the
overtime, the defense was
asked to stop Seminole one
more time. A first down run
lost two yards, but then the
Indians’ quarterback Jarod
Adams took over. First he
spun out of a tackle to run
26 yards to the 1. After that,
Adams ran it over for the
game-winning touchdown.
Seminole, which had just
101 yards in the first half,
finished with a 321-259 ad-
vantage over Sweetwater.
"Our defense played well
most of the night," Slaughter
said. “Unfortunately, when
we needed them the most
they weren't there.
“The goal line stand in the
second half was huge. II was
awesome. We just weren't
able to do anything with it."
Sweetwater’s offense was
awesome at the staid of the
game after moving 69 yards
m four plays to take a 7-0
lead. A 48-yard run by A..J.
McCov gave the Mustangs a
first-and-goal at the 10, and
MeCov scored two plays
later from the 3 with 10:47
left in the first quarter.
Seminole took over at the
Mustang 22 after partially
blocking a punt, but Clint
Jav immediately recovered
a fumble to end the threat.
Seminole returned the fa-
vor, though, when Daniel
Allen intercepted a pass and
returned it 15 yards for a
touchdown to tie the game
at 7 later in the first period.
But Sweetwater answered
with a second scoring drive
that was set up by a spectac-
ular 66-yard McCoy run on
a third-and-33 yes, 33
play from the Mustangs' 18.

Blackwell gets halftime win at Lohn
I.OIIN — The Blackwell Express
ran all over Lohn on Friday. The
visiting Hornets led 36-0 after one
quarter, then added 22 points in the
second period for a 58-0 win.
The game was called at halftime
due to the 45-point mercy rule as
Blackwell improved to 2-0 overall
and dropped Lohn to 0-2.
Blackwell's defense not only threw
a shutout, but created several points
as the Hornets had two safeties plus
a fumble return and interception
return for touchdowns.
The offense was pretty strong, too,
accounting for 203 cards on just 21
snaps in the abbreviated game.
('alien Ware was the leading rush-
er for Blackwell! with 70 yards on just
four carries, and he accounted for
four touchdowns in all.

1 yard, threw a 22-yard touchdown
pass to I ladle> Holland and returned
a fumble for his fourth TD.
Holland also scored on a 25-yard
interception return for Blackwell's
last touchdown and kicked three
extra points; Zae Burwick threw a
5-vard scoring pass to Caleb Jeter
and scored on a 25-vard run; and
Ethan Anderson got BlaekwelU's
other touchdown on a 10-yard run.
In addition to Ware’s pass, Burwick
completed 3 of 6 passes for 40 cards
and Jeffrey Friar completed a 10-yard
toss. Holland had three catches for
43 curds, while Travis White caught a
30-yard pass. Will Roz/.lle rushed for
22 V aids and Anderson 13. White also
