Denton group Brave Combo to help Byrne
entertain at post-wedding celebration
By Lisa L. Rollins
Staff Writer
When David Byrne, founding member of the rock group Talking Heads,
decided to celebrate his recent walk down the aisle of matrimony, he invited
250 guests—four of whom are “polkamaniacs” and members of the Denton
group Brave Combo.
Brave Combo, which was formed in 1979, comprises its founder Carl
Finch on guitar, accordion, piano and vocals; Bubba Hernandez on bass
guitar, tuba and vocals; Jeffrey Barnes on alto and tenor saxophones, clairinet;
and Mitch Marine on drums.
Brave Combo’s music combines Latin-flavored blends of polka, jazz,
schottische, rhumba, reggae and waltz music to create its self-described
music style called “world dance music.”
All members of the group have attended NT. Finch has a master’s degree
in advertising art and Hernandez received a bachelor’s degree in jazz studies.
Both Marine and Barnes attended the School of Music.
Marine said the members of Brave Combo first met Byrne “at the State
Fair in 1985" when Byrne “was down in Texas checking out movie locations
for ‘True Stories,”’ which is the title of Byrne’s PG-rated feature film that
was filmed in and around the Metroplex.
Although Byrne was married earlier this year, his belated wedding reception
and party will be held Sunday “in Greenwich Village in New York, New
York,” Marine said.
“I don’t know how long he (Byme) has been married,” Marine said,
“but it hasn’t been very long; I do know that. His wife is Addelle Lutz,
but everybody calls her Bonny.”
Marine said Lutz met Byme during the making of “True Stories/’
“She (Lutz) was a costume designer for the movie,” Marine said, “but 1
don’t know exactly how long they’ve known each other.”
Members of Brave Combo, whose music was included on the motion
picture’s soundtrack, will depart for New York Saturday at 1 p.m. The
group will play “from about 9:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Sunday at the
post-wedding celebration,” Marine said, “but I don’t know what songs
we’ll play It’s really hard to say what songs we’ll do ... but it will be
dance music.”

Denton Community Choir
seeks out new members
By Elyce Moroney
Daily Reporter
The Denton Community Choir,
which practices from 7:30 to 9:30
p.m. on Mondays at Trinity Pres-
byterian Church, 2200 Bell Ave. in
Denton, is now seeking new mem-
bers.
The Choir is open to anyone who
enjoys singing, said Phyllis Hupp,
public relations representative for the
choir. All ages are represented in
the choir from juniors in high school
to people in their 70s.
“There are people who are pro-
fessionals, and there are people who
can’t read music but love to sing,”
Hupp said. Anyone may attend re-
hearsals.
The choir is under the direction
of Dick Fulton. Fulton directed choir
and gave voice lessons for 13 years.
“There are more men needed in
the choir. Out of the 34 present ...
only 10 are male," Hupp said.
“Actually we need tenors,”
Fulton said. “There is always a need
for men in choirs. My goal is 50
members. We have several students
from NT in our choir. There are a
lot of good singers at NT.”
The choir will perform at the
Festival of Choirs Dec. 1 in Denton
and also at another event Dec. 8.
