TUG OF WAR—William Smith fights for possession of
the ball with a Northeast Louisiana player in NT's
79-69 loss Saturday night. The Eagles will play South-
west Texas in San Marcos Thursday.

Despite a strong first half, the NT men's basketball team
suffered its first conference loss Saturday night against
Northeast Louisiana University, 79-69.
NT took a 10-point lead in the first half, led by forwards
Ronnie Morgan and Tony Worrell. Overall. Morgan had
23 points and Worrell had 20 points, but they were not
enough to stop four NLU players in double figures.
The Indians cut the Eagles lead to one by half-time. With
two-and-one-half minutes left in the half. NLU scored seven
points. At the buzzer it was NT 36. NLU 35.
“About three minutes before the half, the guys went
into their own thing,” head coach Jimmy Gales said. "It
seemed like they were oblivious to everything on the floor
In the second half, the Eagles scored the first basket, but
then the Indians scored 11 unanswered points. From there
they raised their advantage to 21.
NLU head coach Mike Vining said,"We played great
in the first 15 minutes of the second hall NT hit a cold
spell, and we held on for our lives
Indian guard Derrick Pollard broke loose early to score
eight points in the first four minutes of the second half.
Forward Alvin Jefferson played close defense on Worrell,
keeping his scoring down.
"Jefferson did a great job on Worrell,” Vining said.
"He kept Worrell from getting hot, which he has a tendency
to do."
The Eagles take to the road from here. On Thursday
they will play Southwest Texas State University in San
Marcos, and on Saturday they will play Sam Houston State
University in Huntsville.
“We have to start over," Morgan said. “We have to
sweep our road trip.”
Worrell said, “We weren't mentally prepared for to-
night."
But Vining said his team wasn't ever sure of its lead and
felt there was always the threat of an NT comeback.
“I was afraid of NT breaking open, and after being up
by 19 it would have killed us," Vining said. “It is a
good thing Anthony Jones kicked in, otherwise it would
have really gotten out of hand."
The Eagles return to the Super Pit Feb. 4 to play host to
McNcese State University. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.

Track team leaves trail of wins
Women’s Basketball through Jan. 24
By Bryce Tennant
Staff Writer
The NT track team had strong in-
dividual performances in the Sooner
Indoor Invitational meet Jan. 23 and
24. Long-jumper Sandra Mondy led the
team with a total of 18 points.
Mondy took first place in the long
jump with a leap of 19 feet 1/4 inch
and second place in the triple jump with
an effort of 37-7.
“Sandra turned in a great per-
formance,” said coach Ken Garland.
NT competed against Division I
schools Texas Christian University,
Baylor University, Texas A&M Uni-
versity, Oklahoma State University and
the University of Oklahoma.
“Division 1 track is very tough, and
we will feel the heat,” Garland said.
“But it is what we will be facing all
year long, and it will definitely help us
at Southland Conference meet time."
In other women’s results, Laura
Minchey won third in the 600-yard run
with a time of 1 minute, 33 seconds.
Teammate Arthea Adams finished fourth
with a time of 1:33.3.
Angela Taylor placed fourth in the
55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.70
seconds, and Rachel Barr won fourth
in the shot-put with a throw of 41-7‘/2.
In the men's division Mike Tansey
tied the NT school record in the pole
vault with a vault of 15-6, which won
him a fourth place tie.
In other men’s results, Tim Martin
finished third in the mile run with a
time of 4.18.6. The 1,600-meter relay
team of Johnnie Rodgers, Roger Ricks,
Eddie Calvin and Ronnie Boiles placed
third.
“The middle distance people look
good. If they can keep it up and round
into shape they can be a real threat in
the conference," Garland said
John Ngeny placed fourth in the
3,000-meter run with a time of 8:14.
Long-jumper Keith Brown grabbed
fourth w ith a jump of 22-9, and high-
jumper Ron Brown tied for fourth by
jumping 6-9'/2.
The Eagles compete in the Razorback
Indoor Invitational at the University of
Arkansas Jan. 30 and 31.
