Area universities sponsor Dallas
symposium on childhood education
By Karen Knight
Daily Reporter
The Federation of North Texas Area
Universities, which includes NT, will
have its Fall Symposium on Early
Childhood Education at 6:30 p.m. today
at E.D. Walker Special Education Center
in Dallas.
Dr. James Garbarino, president of the
Erikson Institution of Advanced Studies
in Child Development will speak.
The topic of Garbarino’s presentation
is “The Role of Teachers in Child
Development.”
“I suspect he will give vital in-
formation about the growth and de-
velopment of children," said Dr. Janet
Black of NT’s education faculty.
Garbarino received his bachelor’s
degree in elementary education from
Saint Lawrence University in Bronxville.
N.Y., and his master’s and doctoral
degrees in child psychology from
Cornell University in Ithaca, N Y.
He has won awards for his research,
for a film on child abuse, and for his
book “Successful Schools and Com-
petent Children.”
Garbarino has made previous presen-
tations on “The Psychologically Bat-
tered Child,” “The Role of Schools
on the Human Ecology of Child Mal-
treatment,” and “Latchkey Children
and their Families.”
Black said about 400 to 500 people
are expected to attend. "There will be
undergraduate and graduate students,
parents, teachers, school administrators
and social workers,” she said.
“I believe there will be more social
workers at this symposium because of
Dr. Garbarino’s research on child
abuse,” Black said.
Preregistration information for the
symposium is available at the early
childhood education department in
Matthews Hall 245.
Tickets cost $7.50 for the general
public and $5 for students from uni-
versities in the Federation.
Preregistration is not required to
attend. The hour from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30
p.m. is reserved for registration at the
symposium site.
"To facilitate crowd control, I would
suggest preregistration,” Black said.

Math lab offers solutions
By Steve Delafield
Daily Reporter
For those students who fear and loathe
the thought of factoring a quadratic-
equation, or for those whose last math
course was one too many years ago,
help is available.
NT’s mathematics lab in General
Academic Building 455 is designed to
help students with short-term problems
in lower-level math courses.
“Usually, algebra and business math
students benefit the most from the lab,
because their backgrounds are the
weakest," said Kourosh Behzadnoori,
Denton graduate student who teaches
in the lab.
Frequently students procrastinate,
waiting until the last possible moment
before a test to do their homework, he
said.
“Some people think there are magical
mathematical formulas, but there are
none,” Behzadnoori said. “Just hard
work.”
The lab is open from 8 a m. to 7:30
f. m. Monday through Thursday and
from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday.
