The Nolan County
Amateur Radio Association
will be demonstrating
amateur radio at Newman
Park on Saturday, June
27. Everyone is welcome,
including any youth orga-

HAM radio's new capabili-

their own amateur radio
license before the next
disaster strikes. The annu-
al event, called "Field Day
Week", which is sponsored
by the ARRL, the national
association for amateur
radio, will take place all
day, beginning at 8:30
a.m. Using only emergency
power supplies, HAM oper-
ators will construct emer-
gency situations all day
in the park. Their slogan:
"HAM radio works when
other systems don't!", is
more than just words to the
operators as they prove they
can send messages in many
forms without the use of
phone systems, internet, or
any other form of commu-
nication that can be com-
promised during a crisis.
More than 30,000 amateur
radio operators across the
country participated in last
year's event. There are over
650,000 amateur radio
licenses in the US and more
than 2.5 million world
wide. Through the ARRL's
Amateur Radio Emergency
Services Program, HAM
volunteers provide the
National Weather Services'
