Phonathon rings up contributions;
pledges to date total $40,000
By Scott Boyter
Daily Reporter
The NT Phonathon has received
pledges totaling nearly half of its goal
of $90,000, Joe Gonzales, phonathon
director, said last week.
“We’ve received about $40,000 in
pledges, not counting the two or three
thousand in matching company contri-
butions," Gonzales said.
The phonathon is scheduled to con-
tinue for four weeks.
“We have 40 students working for
us, and we try to get a commitment
from them to work two nights a week,"
he said.
Gonzales said that soliciting funds is
not simple. The students receive as many
as 20 rejections for every call that results
in a pledge.
“In the first 14 nights of the phona-
thon, our kids made 4,659 calls. We
had 915 people pledge and 3.744 people
said no,” he said.
The people who refuse to make dona-
tions do so for a variety of reasons,
and in a variety of different ways,
Gonzales said.
“Most of the people are as polite
as possible. They give answers like ‘I
appreciate your taking the time to contact
me, but I really can't pledge,’ ” he
said.
“A few of them tell us that they
sent a check but we never receive it.
Still others say that they’ve already
pledged, when we know they haven't
because we have the information right
in front of us.”
Callers have data sheets containing
the alum's name, phone number and
data regarding previous pledges he or
she has made. Gonzales said.
“If we see someone who donated
$1,(XX) in 1985, but didn’t pledge in
1986, we get concerned. We want to
contact him and find out what the
situation is,” he said.
Some people get a little nasty, Gon-
zales said. “Some will come right out
and tell you that they think the university
has taken advantage of them,” he said,
“and some have bad feelings about not
getting a scholarship they wanted.”
The alurrmi who pledge do so because
they have fond memories of NT, Gon-
zales said. He said, “They’ll remember
a certain professor they had or something
really good that happened to them while
they were here.”
He said a few sensitive situations have
developed. “I’ve seen a few bad, even
sad situations, We called one lady whose
husband had died just two days be-
fore," he said.
“She wasn’t mad; she started talking
about how she felt and what she was
going through. She was talking to a
complete stranger but that didn’t matter.
All she wanted was someone to listen."
Pledges have also been made and then
withdrawn by another member of the
household, he said. “There was one
instance where we called a man and he
said ’Put me down for $400.’
“When we called back to verify the
p ,jge. his wife said, ‘He’s in the
shower now, but you can forget about
the four hundred. He didn’t tell me
anything about it.’ ”
Gonzales said the ultimate goal for
the phonathon is to get everyone to
pledge.
“I’m very pleased with the success
we’ve had. The kids have worked hard
and have done very well,” he said.
