Stevens to air Classic Core
at honor society induction
Vi t'<>* fltgsiS
By Mandy Goad
Daily Reporter
Dr. Robert Stevens of the English fac-
ulty will speak today about the College
of Aits and Sciences Classic Learning Core
at the induction for new members of Phi
Kappa Phi, a universitywide honor society.
The ceremony will be at 2:30 p.m.
today in Masters Hall 324. Dr. Jerry
Dobson of the chemistry faculty, president
of Phi Kappa Phi, said the public is
invited. "In fact, we would love for
them to come,” he said.
Phi Kappa Phi will initiate 11 members,
including three faculty members.
“Phi Kappa Phi gives recognition
based on academic performance. The
students have more than a 3.85 grade point
average,” Dobson said.
Of the Classic Learning Core, Stevens
said, “It is a program to link required
courses in liberal arts each semester so
that no major classics get left out."
It offers students a coherent, highly
unified set of core courses in English
composition and grammar, world literature,
foreign languages and literature, world
history, American history, American
government and politics, art appreciation,
classical argument, ethics and the history
and philosophy of both the physical and
social sciences.
According to information from the
College of Arts and Sciences, certain
courses must be taken together in given
semesters so teaching and learning can
be coordinated on related courses.
"It is designed to economize students'
reading, so students don’t read texts more
than once," Stevens said.
Classic Core students are strongly
encouraged to take Latin as their foreign
language, and a large proportion of the
group of 100 freshmen enrolled in the core
chose to do so.
“This is value-oriented education,
combining the three coherent themes of
virtue, civility and reason,” Stevens said.
The Classic Learning Core was under-
taken by the College of Arts and Sciences
faculty to enhance higher education.
“Three federal grants totaling about a
half million dollars were given the first
year. One grant is intended to bring non-
traditional (older) students to NT,”
Stevens said.
Dobson said, “I think the Classic
Learning Core is important and deserves
recognition on campus.”

NT40 presents University Day
Celebration marks change from NTSC to NTSU
By Clint Clark
Daily Reporter
NT40 is presenting University Day
today to commemorate May 6, 1961,
the day North Texas State College
became North Texas State University.
The celebration begins at 5:30 p.m.
on the Advancement Center lawn.
The celebration is free and will
include games and other entertainment.
Some of the activities scheduled are
volleyball, Frisbee and a three-legged
race. NT President Al Hurley will cut
the first slice from a large cake that
has been baked to commemorate the
occasion.
Lindsay Keffer, assistant director
of the University Union and adviser
to NT40, said, “The day is cele-
brated the first Friday in May, and
we usually have a good turnout. As
many as 300 people have celebrated
the event at the center.”
NT used to celebrate University Day
with pep rallies and convocations.
“In the early 1970s it diminished
to just a day of recognition,” Keffer
said. “It was remembered, but there
wasn’t a celebration.”
In the mid-1970s, NT President
C.C. Nolan brought the day more
recognition by having celebrations in
the front yard of his house, which is
now the Advancement Center.
