Students and staff at
Southeast Elementary start-
ed walking today as part of
their recess. The statewide
program, Walk Across Texas,
was a proclamation issued
by Governor Rick Perry to
promote physical fitness.
According to LaVerne
Yarborough, a physical edu-
cation teacher at the school,
the students and teachers
are broken up into teams to
walk in. They will walk for
15-30 minutes every Friday
for the next eight weeks. The
teams and classes that com-
pile the most distance, will
win a trophy to display in
their classrooms.
"We are doing it for fit-
ness," Yarborough said. "It's
for the health of the kids.
There is a lot of obesity in kids
these days, and want them to
be healthy, and learn how to
exercise. It helps them per-
form better in school, physi-
cally and academically."

The American Red Cross, located in
Abilene, is constantly at work. Even when
there are no disasters going on, the Red
Cross is making sure that people are pre-
pared and ready to assist.
Ann McCarthy, Sweetwater resident,
has been an active member of the Red
Cross since the tornado in 1986.
"There are constant classes and train-
ings going on at the Red Cross. Anyone is
welcome to attend and become a volun-
teer," Ann McCarthy, volunteer auditor
for the Red Cross, said.
The local chapter has been involved in
helping with fires, floods and other disas-
ters. According to Allison Coggins, West
Texas Emergency Sendees Coordinator,
said that the last fire in Sweetwater, was
around this past June. The most recent
I fire in Abilene was the Abilene Candy
Company building.
"Depending on the disaster, depends
on what kind of help we provide. Usually
with the fires, we are canteening the fire-
fighters," Coggins said.
Besides the disaster services, the Red
Cross provides lifeguarding classes,
learning to swim classes, first aid classes,
babysitting classes, services to armed
forces, military connections and interna-
tional social services.
"There are people in Abilene from the
Congo that we have helped keep in touch
with their families," Coggins said.
The next big event that the Red Cross
will be hosting is the Sheltering Bootcamp,
on Oct. 3. The training session will be
at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health
Department. The training will consist of
mass care overview and how to fulfill the
mission.
"The training was originally started for
the Medical Reserve Corp, but anyone is
welcome to attend," McCarthy said.
If you are wanting to attend the session
contact Allison Coggins at 325-677-2622.

New opportunities bring fresh faces to Sweetwater.
The Sweetwater Wal-Mart Supercenter has a new store
manager. Randie Jones arrived about a week ago, and
started in his new position.
"I am still learning the ropes and working on things
around the store," Randie Jones, Wal-Mart store man-
ager said,
Jones comes to Sweetwater from Vernon, TX. He has
also been in Houston, and for the past nine years, has
been in Ft. Worth.
"I started with Wal-Mart, in 1989.1 was working part-
time as a cart pusher, for a Christmas job," Jones said.
He decided to move to Sweetwater when the store was
available.
"The area looked familiar. Sweetwater is alot like
Vernon, it's a small community. I feel that I may be able
to help the store and the community," Jones said
After being in Sweetwater for a week, Jones said that
he is liking the community.
"There are some things that need to be done in the
store to make it the best that it can be, but we are well
on our way," Jones said.
.As store manager, Jones is in charge of keeping the
store stocked and taking care of customers ana associ-

Spring. There they attended a leadership camp to strengthen both their leadership
skills and their sense of self. Amanda Erw in, Carlee Smith. Parker Scott, Cameryn
Jones, Cameron Fox, Ashley Erwin, Nick Nemir and Sean Morrow all attended the
three-day camp and were awarded their certificates of completion.
"The people in the company have really taken care of
me and my family. They nave helped me learn what 1
need to, and made me feel welcome," Jones said.
Jones and his family are a Wal-Mart family. He met
his wife while she was an associate at Wal-Mart and his
children love spending their time in the toy section.
"They love coming to visit me and shopping at Wal-
Mart. They spend about ninety percent of their time in
the toy section," Jones said.
Sweetwater is a place that Jones said he can see him-
