Mr. Mechler was granted authority

plot their routes on missions of Axis
destruction by any or all of four
proved methods: pilotage--navigat-
ing by observing familiar landmarks;
dead reckoning—navigating by aerial
compass and other precision instru-
ments; radio—riding the beam or
rather following the “dah-dit” sig-
nals of friendly transmitters; and
celestial—maintaining a course by-
checking triangular patterns formed
by heavenly bodies.
