looked In my cxperwac* in treating
infected herd* I find nearly 70 per
cent are saved
There ar* now two principal meth-
od* of administration u»*d; namely,
simultaneous and serum alotx meth-
ods. The simultaneous treatment,
where trained men can he obtained U>
do the worn, ia found to be the more
aatisfactory. This treatment consists
of the mjscting of serum and virus at
the same time. It produce* a more
lusting immunity, usually for life, al-
though some animals have been known
to become infected after six months
Thi percentage of loas by thi* method
is greater than the loa* by the aerum
alone method used ui non infected
herd*, but when taking into considera- i
tion the fact that many owner* of
hogs forgot, or do not even know that
serum alone produces only a tempor- !
ary immunity and consequently ant- I
mals after a certain length of time 1
again become susceptible, and in I
many caaes do become infected, you
will see that this result* in a percen-
tage of loss greater than the initial
loss of the Himultaneou* treatment. I
The serum alone treatment when used j
in the herd immediately after cholera
apt tears usually gives good result*,
this constituting a simultaneous
treatment. The simultaneous treat-
ment should be administered by
specially trained mer. who know the
dangers in handling virus and can
from the history and diagnosis intelli-
gently judge as to what treatment to
administer. Careless handling of vi- [
rus may result in permanently infect- |
ing a heretofore cholera free terri-
tory. The advantages of serum alone j
are the lack of danger and expense, j
When accompanied by a syringe and
instauciiuns for the administering of
the same, serum can be sent to a far-
ine* of ordinary intelligence with good
results, but he must be informed as to
the length of temporary immunity pro-
duced by this method, so that he can
have his herds re-inoculated after the 1
immunity run* out

wi.ich consists of first giving the ani-
mal awruni a lone, followed a week ia
i ter with the simultaneous treatment.
Thu Bt th-id give* very good result*,
but a greater expanse is attached and
m«r* time is necessary than for the
immediite simultaneous treatment.
Treating with serum alorn anti then
exposing toe treated animal to hog
cholera is also practiced. This, how -
ever, is in most cases a compulsory
mailer, as so man) owners of hogs
wait until Ui* turd is mtected tod ore
they use the serum. 1 Me utmost pre-
caution mi*, lie taken in either meth-
od to prevent secondary comb on*,
such as atiscasses. tumors, septicas-
tnw and pyemia. Here the value of
the trained man manifest* nself. The
virus uied m the case ot the simultan-
eous treatment should be .- >mewtiat
attenuated, nut in sufficient strength
to produce a cellular reaction resuuing
in the production of the so-cail*d anti-
Uodies. These anti bodies, which are
perhaps a chemical compound, have a
great affinity for the vims producing
hug cholera. When these two sub- 1
stances come in contact with each
other the chemical known as virus w
taken into or absorbed by tile chemi-
cal known as anti-bodies, constitumg
a chemical combination. It i* pruba- j
