,hir report cards were given out
week showing an improvement
last month. Kyle Muennink made
or right
handed, and gets ready for the jump
When he jumps the shot is sent into
the air at about a forty-five degree
angle.
Discus throwing was one of the
ancient teats of Greece. Since 1896
discus throwing has been a popular
sport in Europe and America. The
modern discus is made of hard wood
and metal. It i* eight inches in diam-
eter and weighs about four pounds
and a half. The discus thrower stands
in a seven and a quarter foot circle
with the discus lying flat against the
palm of his hand. After a few swings
and a rapid turn of the body the
contestant releases the discus and
lets it sweep through the air. The
record for this is one hundred and
forty-eight feet and one and n half
inches. It was set in 1912. This sport
is very good as it does not tire the
thrower.
The pole vault is another field
event which requires great skill.
This sport consists of leaping over
a hori*ontal bar with the aid of a
strong pole. The vaulting pole should
he of strong, tough wood, about
thirteen to f'f* *'n feet long. The
highest grades making it possible vaulter approaches the bar at a run,
him to be on the Honor Roll.

The spellers, essay writers and
other contestants in literary events
are at work, too, The eliminations in
these contests have not been held
as yet.
The boys who are trying for places
in track and field look like a regular
army when grouped together. Every
boy in school seems to be trying his
ability at such things. They’ve sworn
not to be outdone by Yancey and
that oath was no idle group of words.
The tennis players, both boys and
girls are practicing eagerly. From
the dandy bunrh of volley hall girls I
Miss Way has, we need not fear for
the results in that game.
Since we are all working so hard,
won’t the town people please come
to Devine next week and help us to
win by a liberal backing?

rests the pole in a hole close to the
crossbar, and lifts himself into the
air. He must go over the crossbar
without dislodging it. The world's
amateure record for this is thirteen
feet two and orie-fourth inches.
High jumping is an old game con-
sisting of jumping over a crossbar.
The runner approaches the crossbar
at a run. He is supposed to jump
over it without dislodging it. This
ia good exercise for the legs.
Broad jump is different from high
jump. The contestant approaches a
pit, full of sand or soft soil, on a
run. He rises at a hoard about nine
feet from the pit. If the contestant’s
foot touches the ground between the
board and the pit before he rises, the
jump is a foul and does not count.
This sport is a very good exercise.
All of these events help to develop
a growing body both rm ntally and
physically and everybody should take
part in them.

Preparation* for the County Meet.
A track meet is to be held at De-
vine March the 22-23.
Track is progressing very nicely,
as we have some good material. We
have practice and work outs each
evening now, so that we can win 'at'
the Sabina! meet next Friday, and
also win in the meet which is to be
held in Devine on March the 22 and
23.
Mr. Barry goes out with the track
team two evenings a week, and base
ball the other “three evenings. Mr.
Clem has been having it hard the

By next Thursday the entire track
team will have accumulated plenty ot
wind and endurance for the dreadful!
county meet. By the way things look
the entire High School has taken in-
terest in some event or another. Hon-
do ought to win the meet with all of
this material. Mr. Barry and Mr.
Clem have been working hard to get
the track team into shape for the
meet.
You ought to see Thomas Taylor
run the hurdles, and he also gives
the pole vault the fit sometimes by
clearing the pole nine feet.
Don and John, and oh yes, that
Leaping Leo Pettis are the dHsh men.
Thomas' is also trying the high
jump. He would scare the entire town
if he could jump five feet.
Don and Nuel Windrow are the
broad jumpers. Nuel liked to have
made the pit the other day, and
Don scared the other side.
Carl is trying the low hurdles this
season without looking at a hurdle
the entire year. Don’t try to kid
