A CHORUS LINE
San Francisco, ........Every-
one is talking about
"Chorus Line.” The Inter-
national Company, which
played London and will go
from San Francisco to
Washington, D.C., is having
a smash success in this
beautiful city by the sea.
There are no tickets to be
had. It is sold out til the end
of the run - so I pulled a
little clout and called the
PR lady and said I HAVE to
see that show. You must
have some house seats you
can sell me. I write for six
papers and an entertainment
magazine in Houston, Texas.
She had and she did.
It is one of the most en-
thralling stage productions
I have sat through and gave
me the same lift and stimu-
lation I had when I saw
"Hair.” That youthful ex-
huberance, and in this
instance, moving experience
as each of the dancers
aspiring for a place in a
show tells the casting di-
rector his own very personal
story.
A great dramatic gambit
is used in direction. The
casting director seems to be
in the rear of the theatre,
addressing the onstage audi-
tioners over a loud speaker.
Thus his voice and questions
are amplified from the hack,
over the heads of the
audience, drawing each of
us more intimately into the
exchange between them,
and thus more emotionally
into each story.
There’s power in the
simplicity of the format and
a really gripping denoue-
ment as the eight are chosen
from about 20 who audition.
All the dancers are well cast.
There are many types and
many stories within the
company. The veracity and
their honesty in perform-
ance strengthens the simple
theme which has one love
story within the many. If
you get to San Francisco
you might try for a can-
cellation at the Curran
Theatre. It’s worth standing
in line to catch the Michael
Bennett paean of praise to
the unsung 4 chorus line
wh'ch hacks up the stars.
VANITIES
"I w:sh I had written
that pla>, ” an experienced
writer s«. d after he saw
"Vanities,' the current
show in TUTS Cabaret
Theatre at the Shamrock-
H il ton H< lei. It’s 1 HAT
good a play and was
nominated for the best of
the year by the New York
Drama Critics.
Jack Heifner, formerly of
Corsicana, wrote this as a
second effort at playwright-
ing. His experience as an
actor gave the 30 year old
author a sure feeling for
dramatic dialogue and
staging. He set the play in a
Texas town, and has cap-
tured the nuances expertly,
as he tells the story of the
development of three girls
as they progress through
high school cheerleading to
college sorority life and
then approach their middle
age with thinly veiled terror.
The mirror Heifner holds
to American middle class
mentality is deeply reflec-
tive. He depicts banality
with delightful humor.
There are plenty of laughs.
Hidden beneath the comedy
is the pathos of superficial
women, seeking self.
Robin Groves, Mercedes
Ruehl and Lynn Ritchie are
the New York actresses who
have played this work pre-
viously in Cincinatti and
now are giving Houston
audiences excellent per-
formances. A TUTS official
said the author is coming
this week to see their com-
pany, it is reputed o be the
best of several extant. He

should be pleased because
the three performers are
realizing his characteriza-
tions fully. They are silly
teenagers, snide college
coeds planning a rush week,
and finally three very di-
verse women meeting for
tea. It is nostalgic, comic
and true to life.
DEAN GOSS COMEDY
Dean Goss Dinner
Theatre has a farce titled
"Not With My Daughter,"
starring several of his most
popular performers. After
Deano himself welcomes the
audience with his banter
they are ready for the
hijinks director Glenn
Holtzman has prepared.
Heading the bill this time
is Kevin Cooney as a
divorced man, playing the
field, running from middle
age, and before the evening
is over-from an Amazon-
like woman with a southern
drawl.
If you get past the open-
ing exchange between
Cooney and Ron Jackson,
who plays the cross-the-hall
neighbor, you’ll have a lot
of laughs, thanks to the
predicaments and the pretty
girls. Jackson, alas, mistakes
mugging for acting, and
