REEL ONE
WHAT’S NEXT FOR
GARY PLAYER?
Nothing has given me
greater pleasure than to
have Gary Player come from
nowhere to win first the
Master’s, then the Tourn-
ament of Champions and last
Sunday the Houston Open
Championship at Wood
lands.
Note only is Player a man
of small stature, but he's
43...an age when most fans
feel an athlete is past his
prime. Also, by winning
three in a row for the first
time that’s been done in
three years, Player also
proved you don’t have to be
a fashion plate to win on the
golf tour. Sometimes I get
so sick of reading where a
young Turk of 23 dresses
like the rainbow has done it
again.
Now they can watch Play
er in his attire of black
pants, black shirt and black
baseball cap slowly stroll to
victory. And it’s all because
his good wife took a hand
and told him what he’s been
doing wrong. After seven
kids, a bundle of money and
victories in every major golf
tourney you can name i’d
figure that Gary was doing
everything well. But some
times it’s hard to please the
little women....I know after
being married 25 years to a
gal just like Vivian Player.
REEL TWO
SHE CHANGED His
PITTING STROKE
Anyhow she changed his
putting stroke and now he’s
a terror. Player will move
over to New Orleans this
week in his search for a
fourth straight victory...and
I'll be pulling for «him. He
will also figure big in the
PGA, U.S. Open and British
Open...and maybe this year
he’ll make the big sweep and
win the big four. But that’s
asking a lot even from a
small guy with a big heart
and lots of ability.
Colonial Dames Meet
HlUUUWFttfJ.j
John Champion Chapter,
Colonial Dames XVII Cen-
tury, met on Saturday,
April 22, at 10 a.m. at
Wyatt's Sharpstown. The
opening ritual was given by
several members in the
absence of the Chaplain,
with Miss Marly Evelyn
Bartlett presiding.
Routine business followed,
with a report of the national
Conference held in Washing-
ton, D. C. April 13-15 and a
National Defense report.
An interesting program on
"Brass Rubbings" was given
by Mrs. William Schweiter
of Baytown. Rubbings of
ancient tombs in England,
which were done by Mrs.
Schweitzer during her stay
in England, were displayed
during her program. Twe
nty members and guests
were present. Luncheon
followed the meeting.
The next meeting will be on
May 27 at Wyatt's Sharps-
town at 10 a.m.
