Speaks
P.J. Riis, professor of classi-
cal archaeology at the Univer-
sity of Copenhagen, Denmark,
and director of its Institute of
Classical and Near Eastern
Archaeology, will speak on “The
First Greeks in Phoenicia’’ at
8:15 p.m., Sunday, March 8, in
Rice University’s Fondren Li-
brary Lecture Lounge.
He will be the guest of the
Houston Society of the Archaeo-
logical Institute of America and
the Institute for the Arts of Rice
University.
Dr. Riis will discuss the arch-
aeological and mythological evi-
dence of Greeks on the Phoeni-
cian coast in the Homeric Age,
the Danish excavations at Tell
Sukas, and the character, back-
ground, and importance of the
Greek settlement at Sukas.
Dr. Riis holds M.A. and Ph.D.
degrees from the University of
Copenhagen.
From 1941 to 1949 he was
Keeper of Oriental and Classical
Antiquities in the Danish National
Museum, and from 1949 to 1956,
Professor of Classical Archaeo-
logy at the University of Aarhus,
Denmark. He participated in ex-
cavations at Hama in Syria and
was field director of the Carls-
berg Expedition to Phoenicia
from 1958 to 1963.
In 1954 he was secretary gen-
eral of the second International
Congress of Classical Studies,
Copenhagen.
Dr. Riis has published several
books on Etruscan art and Syrian
i archaeology, as well as a num-
ber of articles on Classical and
1 Near Eastern archaeology in
Danish and foreign periodicals.
D.A.R. Meeting
Slated March 12
On March 12 the Samuel Sor-
rell Chapter Daughters of the
American Revolution will meet
at the Great Southern Life In-
surance Company at 9:45 a.m.
The theme of the meeting will
be patriotic and presented by
Mrs. Dudley Jarvis, chairman
of conservation. Her subject will
be “The Colonial Naturalist,”
a movie with sound from Col-
onial Williamsburg, Va.
Hostesses are Mrs. George
M. Goodin, Mrs. Tracy Word
and Mrs. William N. Bland.
SMU Choir
Sings March 13
The Concert Choir of Southern
Methodist University will per-
form for the congregation of Bel-
laire United Methodist Church on
Friday evening, March 13.
The choir, under the direction
of Dr. Lloyd Pfautsch, has per-
formed for about six years, but
this will mark its first appear-
ance at the Bellaire church.

March 3, in the home of Mrs.
R.E. Derby, 122 Willowend.
RECORDS REVEAL
Records of the Bellaire Po-
lice Department reveal that
crime is on the increase in
the area. During the first two
months of 1969, 64 prisoners
were actually booked in jail
for other than traffic offenses.
The offenses included theft,
assault, and drunken behav-
ior. During the first two
months of this year, 210 pri-
soners were booked into the
Bellaire jail on similar of-
fenses.
