PUBLIC INVITED TO TAKE SEVERE
STORM SPOTTER TRAINING CLASS
The Amarillo Na-
tional Weather Service
(NWS) will conduct a
Severe Storm Spotter
Class at the Amarillo
College, Business &
Industry Center on April
22nd. The training is
free and open to the pub-
lic.
The class will be held
at Amarillo College
Business and Industry
Center, 1314 S. Polk St.
in Amarillo on Thurs-
day, April 22, 2010 from
7:00 to 9:00 pm. Regis-
tration begins at 6:30
pm. There is no charge
for the class, and those
interested can earn 0.2
CEU Credit and/or 2.0
hours of TCLEOSE
Credit.
The session is open
to anyone who is inter-
ested in learning more
about severe storms.
“The more educated the
public is about severe
weather the better it is
for all of us”, says Steve
Drillette, Warning Coor-
dination Meteorologist.
“Obviously, we hope
that some of those in
attendance will serve as
storm spotters and relay
severe weather reports to
the NWS.”
Skywarn Spotters
serve as the Aeyes and
ears@ of the NWS, pro-
viding real-time ground
truth severe weather re-
ports directly to the
NWS. This information
is vital to the warning
process. Forecasters use
this information, along
with doppler radar, satel-
lite, model data, and sur-
face analysis to provide
the best severe weather
warning service to the
public. To be certified as
a NWS Skywarn Spot-
ter, the individual must
attend a Storm Spotter
Training session at least
once within the last two
years. A certificate of
completion is presented
at the end of the training
to each person in atten-
dance.
“The Amarillo NWS
appreciates the dedica-
tion and commitment of
these volunteers”, said
Drillette. “Despite the
advanced radars and
technology, Skywarn
spotters continue to play
a vital role in the warn-
ing process.”
The primary mission
of the National Weather
Service (NWS) is to pro-
tect life and property by
issuing timely severe
weather watches, warn-
ings and advisories. The
NWS in Amarillo has
forecast and warning
responsibility for the
Texas and Oklahoma
Panhandles, which is
known as their ACounty
Warning Area@. Se-
vere weather season
across the Panhandles
runs from April through
June.

They bring their models
and layout materials to
create a very interesting
route for their trains to
travel. Addressing many
aspects of communities,
the layout is delightful for
children of all ages, an
some who don’t consider
themselves children. This
exhibit fills the Hazle-
wood Gallery and will be
on display through May.
Aprons from the per-
manent collection of the
Square House Museum
will be displayed with
short stories. These gar-
ments cover a span of
history from the early
1900’s through the
1970’s. There are formal
aprons, well-used aprons
and some showing the
handiwork of the women
who made them.
These creations will be on
display through June in
the Purvines Gallery of
the Square House.
