1877, was 445. Prof. Somerville
reported the names of pupils neither
absent nor tardy, among them the
following: Frank Hibbard, George

Nevins, Stella Yeidel, Alice Hanna,
Roy Alexander, Blanche Bennett,
Georgia Sage, Jennie Acheson.

Yesterday was one of the n.ost
delightful days of the winter. The
eir was full of sunshine and warmth.
The surrounding country was vis-
ited by large numbers of city folks

The Pawpaw wagon bridge is
to a very dangerous condition, the
planking having rotted out, leaving
a hole large enough to admit the
foot of a horse_— —Clum Fox, for-
merly of this city, has engaged in
the marble business at Shawnee. I.
T. He also has a branch yard at
Bonham-There waa a very poor
attendance at the war lecture of Dr.
Acheson, owing to the very un-
pleasant weather. The doctor la a
very interesting talker and those
who braved the weather were amply
repaid----—Last fall the writer put
in two and half acres of turnips on
shares with a colored man. During
the last cold snap about ioo bushels
left in the ground frose. This wss
all owing to the laxy, good for

Lipscorrb arrived home yesterday
from Ardmore. He states that
over 40,000 bales of cotton had been
marketed in Ardmore to date tor

Decker has moved from the fourth
to the second ward. He is arrang

Monday he sold the carcass to a
butcher at South McAlester. As
soon as the deer wss put on exhi-
bition for sa*e the Indian police
claimed it on tbe ground that tbe
slayer, was a non-resident of tbe In-
dian Territory. Tbe matter was
taken up with Ihdian Agent Wis-
dom of Muscogee, who has juris-
diction over such metiers, and he
waa asked what should be done in
the premises. He telegraphed to
tbe Indian police to take charge of
the deer and confiscate all guna and
ammunition belonging to the party

With the Dawes commission, Tbe
returns show a majority of 123
against the ratification in Pontotoc
county, a majority of one against it
in Tishomingo, county and a major-
ity of five against it in Pickens
county, making a total against rati-
fication in the, three counties of 138
Tbe vote was favorable to it in only
one county, Panola, where a ma-
jority of 14 waa polled. This
leaves a majority of 114 against rat-
ification, which is ft large majority
considering the fact that less than
five hundred votes were polled.

If Denison gets its just deserts it
will be classed as tbe busiest city in
North Texas---------News was re-
ceived here yesterday of the burning
of the general merchandise store of
W. R. Rennie & Co. at Tishomin-
go,- I. T., on Sunday morning.
The stock and building were worth
about $10,000, and were a total
loss. The firm carried light insu-
rance on account of tbe heavy rate
charged in Tishomingo, and the loss
falls very heavily on them__Last
night Black Sam, a notorious con-
fidence man and crook, visited the
Fannie Williams bangio and robbed
the landlady of her diamonds valued
at $2,100 and $30 in money. Black
Sam had lately arrived here from
Cripple Creek and Denver, Col.,
where he is well known in police
circles. He is about 25 years of
age, dark complexion, black eyes
and has a tattoo mark in hia fore-
head. He left the house after mid-
night and ia still at large_Mr.
John Turley whose wagon was
lately smashed up at the Main street
crossing, state* that his driver was
not to blame for the accident as in-
timated in the Gazetteer. Turley
declares that the flagman gave the
signal to come on. Jimmy, the
flagman, informed the Gazetteer
that he yelled at Turley’s driver to
stop. We suppose that it will take
the court* to settle the matter______-
While cleaning a revolver last night,
the weapon was accidentally 'dis-
charged, the ball passing through
the kitchen door of the residence of
Mr. Wallace on Houston avenue
No harm was done, but it waa a
close call for the young lady who
was seated near the door____Let

were seventy-six young men and
women applicants for assistants and
pages in the public library. The
salary of assistant is $30 a month
and page* $4 a week. Here is a
