Dfak Friends :
Td-day we went through part ot the
Naples museum to see the things that
were taken out ot Pompei, since it was
excavated, the most interesting place ot
its kind I was ever in. It contains til the
statues, together with the tre*coes, taken
from the wall* of the buried houses, the
oldest of - the kind in existence. It is
wonderful that those people understood
the art of painting so well. Some ot the
allegorical pictures and those represent-
ing the gods and goddesses are exquisite.
Then the bronze statues are so fine,
among them a statue of Narcissus, about
two feet tall, that is considered one ot
the most charming antique statues ever
found, of a deep green bronze. Many
beautiful mosaics from the doors ot the
house** have been taken up and put into
the floors and walls ot one of the rooms,
the coloring of the figures being marvel-
ously beautiful. Among the statues was
the celebrated Farnese Bull, taken from
the batjis ot Caracolla at Rome, in 1878,
representing the two sons of Antilope-
Amphion and Zethus, avenging the
wrongs ot their mother, by binding
Diice, who had cruelly treated her foi
many years, to the head ot a wild bull.
Antilope is in the back ground exhorting
them to forgiveness. The boldness and
life of the group, which is hewn out of a
single block of marble, all larger than
life, is unrivalled in another work of its
kind. Across fiom this was the F'urnese
Hercules, also found in Caracolla’s Baths,
representing Hercules resting, after per-
forming the eleventh teat imposed upon
him, holding the three golden^tapples ot
Heaprride* in his left hand. It is won-
derful the strength that is expressed in
every line of that figure. Both ot these
weie made sometime in the first century
alter Christ.
Pompei has much to do with the lovely
canned fruits we missed so much in Ger-
many. During the first of the excava-
tions many years ago, some Americans
visited the ruins and were treated to pre-
served tigs, tound in sealed jars, taken
from one of the houses. A hint was
sufficient. When they returned home
the following year the first canning in-
dustry was established, now one ot the
greatest in the land. Thus we are in-
debted to Vesuvius and Pompei tor our
delicous canned fruits.

The Aquarium is considered one of
the most interesting of the world, as it
has theMcditerranean Sea here to furnish
it with wonders, all sorts of cuttle fish,
besides all kinds ot coral, which, much to
my astonishment, I saw breathing in the
water. The most exquisite tlower-like
creatures, that move through the water,
attaching themselves to rocks, and Boat-
ing at will a ound from place to place.
Other things that looked like transparent
exquisitely fashioned vases, which reflect-
ed, like mother ot pearl, all the shades ot
the rainbow, glided around in the most
astonishing way. Indeed, the wonder* ot
old Neptune’s Kingdom were undreamed
of before, by me. In this garden front-
ing our hotel is a pretty little templfc,
In ilt in honor ot Virgil, whose grave is
in Naples, and one to Tasso. At the end
is a large statue of the pianist Thalberg,
who died here in 1871.
One sight which has afforded us infi-
nite amusement is to see a whole herd of
goats driven up in front of the door
morning and night, while their attend-
ants sit down and milk the quantitv wish-
ed by the housewife before her eves.
This system ot peddling milk has it* ad-
vantages, for one is sure to get unadul
terated milk, unless thev water the goats
before starting out. The donkeys are as
distinctive a Neapolitan feature as the
beggats. They are not much larger than
New Foundhcpd dogs, but are used for
carrying alt sorts of burdens by the
peddlers. They have two panniers thrown
over the back, filled with fruits, veget-
ables, anything one wishes to carry; and
these bags are so large that one can see
nothing but a pair of ears sticking out
Occasionally a piteous bray comes some-
where out of this moving market, and
you then " realize that *tis moved by a
living animal, who is protesting against
such a load, in Ps feeble, meek way
They will ci.imb up steps over the moun-
tains like cats, and this reminds me that
the other day when riding through
“Maecaroni Alley” we saw a cat chained
to a post in a blacksmith sho,'. Y ou can
draw your own inletence ot a place where
cats have to be chained to make them
stay. .*••••
This afternoon we went to see Buffalo
Bill’s Wild West Show, which is in
Naples tor two weeks Of course it was
nothing novel to a Texas g but there
w as a party of English ladies at the hotel
who wished to go and we went. Mr
Cody is a very handsome man, and, as
vi>u know, was made quite a lion of in
Er.g'and. The prince dined and lunched
hljn, and the queen went to see the show
and atterwaids asked to have him int»o-
du-cd. This has given him a wonderful
prestige throughout Europe,
When the performances was halt over 1
said »to mv English friends that after it
was ended l intended to send in my card,
and he would receive me in his tent.
tree*.
Alter dinner we took a carriage and
| drove, with three horse* abreast, over the
i Ma>sa road to Deserts, considered the
j finest drive in Europe on account of its
| matchless scenery of mountains, water
and sky. It i* terraced along the west j
side ot the mountain, winding in and out,
always in sight of the bay which was just !
beneath us, giving one new glimp*fl of !
the coast as you emerge trom the curves, !
rising higher and higher each time. On |
the left side ot the drive the mountain j
was covered with groves of orange and
lemon trees, the fragrance ot the budding !
blossoms and the ripened fruit filling the j
air with delicious perfume, the golden
orange and yellow lemons gleaming ’mid i
the green leaves, while on the right side j
was the water, the winding coast dotted j
with little \ iliages—Vesuvius, who follows j
one everywhere, one cannot get out of
his sight; and Capri, looking very like 1
two mountains ot rock rising out ot the j
water, in a deep, purple light.
This scenery we had tor twenty miles,
over a finely paved road.
We alighted at the little hamlet of
Massa and walked up to the peak ot the |
mountain, h&?c a mile of very hard
climbing; but we fett fully repaid for all
the fatigue when we reached our destina-
tion.
On the top, 5,000 feet above, is a sup-
pressed monastery called Deserto, occu-
pied by some monks who have a charita-
ble school for destitute boys, teaching
them to read and write, besides giving
them a thorough education in theoretical
and practical agriculture, the children
working under the d rection ot the
Monks in their extensive vineyards and
orange groves surrounding the building.
*AVe entered their neatly kept hall, and,
attended by a grev-garbed monk, who
was exceedingly deferential, cr ssir.g
himself at sight ot us—as they ever do
when a woman appears—we a&cended to
the roof where the most exqt isite pano-
rama lay beneath us. On one side wan
the bay ot Salertno; in lront, Capri, be-
yond which stretched the blue Mediter-
ranean; on the other side, the bay ot
Naples and its coast—Sorrento, Castel-
lamtnar a, Pompei, Vesuvius, Resina,
built over buried Herculaneum, Naples
Pasillipo, and the is.and ot Uchia to fin-
ish the bow.
The sun was surround d bv ju*t enough
clouds to keep the scene from being daz-
zling, and tire effect ot light and shade
was all the happier.
We descended to the little refectory
where some delicious figs, oranges and
apples, fruit* ot their own labor, were
placed befoie us, together with a bottle
of wine from their own vintage.
I thought, as I sat there, that tor one
who was weary ot life and its soi rows,
this little spot, so tar removed from the
busy world, where no sound disturbs its
quietude save the chime ot the chapel
bell pealing out so sweetly on the clear
mountain air, would be a \ effect haven
of rest. The changing clouds seemed to
typify life with its sunshine and shadows,
the surrounding mountains so quiet and
peaceful, repre^nted the same God
watching silently over u> ail through lite,
and the sea stretching tar beyond our
sight, emblematical ot eternity, when
aher the journey of lite was done the
soul was ready to launch itseit upon the
unknown waters.
This place is a refuge from the world,
to the old “fathers” who will remain un-
til death releases them
Everything was so clean and sweet.
Evidently they consider “cleanliness next
to godliness.” They have their flower
gardens, showing a love tor the beautiful,
too, and we saw many ot the monks
working in the orchard and vineyard,
pruning and training trees and vines.
This excursion to Deserto will always
be cherished a* one of the happiest days
of my life. The beautiful scenes, the
glimpses into the quiet, peaceful lite on
the “heights,” the little r. pa*t after the
weary climb; the ride home, where we
saw a glorious Italian sunset flooding
everything in a golden splendor, turning
to rose as the sun dropped into the sea,
will long be cherished in memory’s
casket.
1 have read much of the beauties ot the
bay ot Naples. Now I have a beautiful
picture ot it to carry home and hang on
memory’s wall.
It is all in such grand propottions. No
little details to distract the mind trom the
perfect whole.
We returned to our hotel, dined and
retired to dream ot a spot flt to be called
the “Garden ot Eden.”
The steamer came the next noon and
bore us away to Capri, where, before
landing, we visited the “Blue Grotto,*
most extraordinary tieakot nature. It is
an immense cavern in the side o‘ the
island entered from the sea in tiny boat
one is obliged to lie down, to enter,
the place isn’t more than three teet high,
but when you go in it is an immense cave
whose waters are ot the clearest azure
one ever beheld, so intensely blue that
the root and walls ot rock seem blue too
even the atmosphere is tinged, seemingly,
and the oars dipping in the water look
like crystal. A small boy was swimming
around and he looked, as he dived trom a
rock into the depths below as if encased
in the most exquisite silver armor.
Will write trom Capri later.

Some little time ago the Prohibi- [
tionists, always uneasy and hunting :
up a grievance, made the horrible
discovery, as thev declared, that j
thousands of gallons of whisky were j
exported from this country to entice i
into intoxication the negro natives of ;
the Congo Free State. Big bales of
petitions were thereupon tolled in
upon Congress with a demand that
the outrage should be stopped. Now
the Treasury Department comes for-

that not a gallon of whisky has ever
been exported from the United
States to ConsTO, and that there is
no necessity for Congress to act,
even if it had the power to interfere.

eight reasons why Chamberlain’s Cough 1
Remedy is the be*t:
1. It will cure a severe cold in less ]
time than anv other treatment.
2. It does not suppress a cough or
cold; but loosens and relieve* it.
3 It relieves the lungs, which is ot
great importance in treating a cold.
4. It is the onlv remedy that will
cause the expulsion of mucus from the
air cells of the lu*’gs.
3. It renders the mucus less tenacious
and easier to expectorate.
6. It will prevent croup and av**rt all
danger and anxiety arising trom that
dreaded disease.
7. It does not contain opium, chloro-

There is not the least danger in gi'ing it
