Denison in pioneer days.
John Rennie, accompanied by his wife,
drove down to Denison last Saturday
evening, returning Sunday night.—Tisho-

C. R. Cline, of Davenport, Iowa, has
located in the city with hit family.
Capt. George Wood, who has a large
plantation in Kauffman county, left for
there last Saturday. He expects to be
absent several weeks, and may not return
at all.
E. N. Marchbanks, late of the Mc-
Carthy hardware house, has gone with
his family to Wolf City.
R. C. Mathews spent last Sunday at
Plano.
R. O. Mulligan, a business man of

Now that Josh Howard b married It
is to be hoped that hb partner, Col.
Thos. E. Reardon, will turn over a new
leaf and go and do likewise. Tom is
rich, good looking and one of the beat
“catches” in Denison. Tom would have
one advantage In case of a domestic
broil, the old woman could not pu'l his
hair, for there is none to pull.

Last Monday evening J. H. Schollln-
ger entertained a few ot his triends in
his delightful rooms on the third floor of
the college building. The evening was
spent in conversation and in listening to
the music of the .£olian. At a suitable
hour grape juice, lunch and ladv fingers
were served. Those present were Dr.
and Mrs. Booth, Mr. and Mr*. Fits, Mr.
and Mrs. Acheson, Misses Foster. Wynn
of Fort Worth, Wilkinson of Austin,
Cora Lingo, Tone, Hortenae Lingo;
Messrs. Kirkland, Stephens, Talley, Max-
well, Poston, Smith and Hanna.
Mrs. Henry Garrett and her daughter,
Miss Annie, have been visiting in Deni-
son the past week. Mr. and Mr*. Garrett
were among the first to make their home
in Denison, locating here early in the
fall of 187a, when Denison was a city of
tents. Mr. Garrett b engineer on the
Katy and his duties requiring hb ser-
vices in Southern Texas, he and hb
family removed to Houston several years

Sherman, where she takes part in an
entertainment given by the A. U. A. M.
She returned home Friday afternoon.

RAILROAD RUMBLIHGS.
All the railroads have made prepara
tions for handling the coming crop.
It is said the Pullman Palace Car com-
pany reaped a tremendous harvest out of
the present war, and it has netted more
money for hauling troops than any of
toe railroads.
The needless whistle of the locomotive,
especially within the city limiu, ought
to be done away with. It U particularly
disagreeable when carried to unnecessary
extremes after midnight.
Conductor Padgitt, of the I. & G. N
with Headquarters at Palestine, was here
the early part of the week.
The Choctaw road has purchased the
Little Rock and Memphis line, 171 miles
long, running through Arkansas to the
Indian Territory line, and will connect
with the same at once. They will take
charge of the road in October.
Passenger traffic on the Katy ia very
heavy.
The roadbed of the Denison and
Washita, which costs the citizens of Deni
son thousands of dollars, has been obliter-
ated by the plow.
Texarkana, Texas, August 9.—Follow-
ing upon the raise of salaries that was
accorded the conductors of the Texas and
Pacific Railroad company, the Kansas
City, Pittsburg and Gult Railway com
pany issued a circular to-day allowing an
increase of 10 per cent on all $50 em
ployees and 5 per cent on the $&> n

in view of the enormous per cent ot the
net earning on the merchandise class,
the rates should be reduced to the extent
ot offsetting the Federal revenue stamp
charge, which the companies have been
forcing the public to pay.
Ex-Conductor Pace, formerly with the
Katy, ha* disposed of hi* ranch property
down near Baird, Texas. He was in
Denison Tuesday shaking hands with his
old friends.
Conductor Timms, of the Utah divis-
ion of the Union Pacific, is spending the
week in the city. He is en route to Nan
Antonio.
Engineer J. C. Blair returned from the
hospital Sunday much improved in
health. He says Will Dantorth, Hank
David and Frank Potter, who have been
confined in the hospital, are improving
and will toon come home.
