indigo industry is threatened with
extinction by the products—dn-
dared to be superior—of German
chemistry. After innumerable at-
tempts a synthetic indigo has been
produced, and haa been rapidly dis-
placing the vegetable product of the
Indian planters, who find themselves
unable to compete, either in price
or quality, with tbe superior dya of
the German laboratories.
