Last Tuesday Mr. W. P. Doran
received a box of coal taken oat of a
well four miles east of Emory. The
land on which the well is situated is
owned by Mr. Gatlin, a blind man
of limited means. The well was
sunk about three years ago. Two
stratas of coal were passed through,
the first seven feet thick, twenty-
eight feet from the surface, and the
other eight feet thick at a depth of
forty-eight feet. The sample to
which we allude was sent by Mr.
J. E. Eskew, of Lone Oak. The
owner, Mr. Gatlin, is not able to
develop*the find, and our object m
calling attention1 to the matter is to
direct the attention of competent
miners to the discovery, that it may
be further investigated. We are not
a judge of coal ourselves, but those
who are can see specimens from this
well by calling at the Gazetteer
office.

Mose Hairis, editor of the Austin
Evening Cdftl, pays Mayor Elect
Hanna the following neat compli-
ment :
Mr. Sam Hanna, an old and re-
spected citizen of Denison, and a
prominent merchant, was elected
mayor in that town, at the recent
municipal election, over Wm. Waltz,
the Knight of Labor and riff-raff
candidate. The former polled 1085
votes, the latter 512. Denison can
congratulate herself upon the fact
that while Mr. Hanna exercises the
functions of the office to which he
has been called, an honest, con-
scientious and enterprising gentle-
man will preside as her chief execu-
tive officer.
